LET’S GET “DISI” WITH IT! Andrea Brock Mathematics Coordinator

WHAT IS “DISI?”  Drop It Solve It  10 to 15 per day = 50 to 65 minutes of extra fluency building time  Fast, fun, and easy to implement activities

WHY?  Students use a lot of their brain power on solving basic facts.  If students know their facts, then they can spend more time on the larger process skills.

EASY ADDITIONS AROUND THE SCHOOL  Facts in restroom  Facts where students eat lunch  Facts above water fountains  Facts on windows

“MATH” TRANSITIONS  Use flashcards When students enter/exit class Restroom breaks Lining up Opening up their books Getting supplies ready for next activity

SCAVENGER HUNT  I have samples to give you. (Students love this game)  Let’s play You will need a piece of paper Start anywhere with a partner Solve the problem and write down your answer. Find your answer at the top of another problem Solve the new problem Solve until you are back at your starting point

BOOK: MATH STRATEGIES YOU CAN COUNT ON (CHAR FORESTON)  Guess My Number (let’s play with sticky notes instead)  Subtraction Action (let’s play with the person beside you)  Number Stars (Number 1-5 on the front and 6-10 on the back) (Number 11-20 on another star)

SUBTRACTION ACTION

“STAR” ACTIVITY  Die Cut enough stars for your class.  Instruction Sheet page 34 (Math Strategies you can count on)  If you choose to laminate the cards, then the numbers can be changed.  Show me 15 Students can show 3 and 5 (multiplication) Students can show 7 and 8; 10 and 5 etc (addition)

I HAVE WHO HAS (CREATIVE TEACHING PRESS)  Division  Multiplication (Let’s play)  Other grade levels are available

POLYHEDRA DICE GAMES (DON BALKA)  Out of print so it was cheap on Amazon  Big Foot (Let’s play with the person beside you)  Leap Frog  Baseball  I used photocopied these activities and placed them in sheet protectors. I had baggies inside with needed supplies.

NUMBER NAME TAGS  Play Music  When the music stops find someone who will Add to your number to make an even sum Multiply with your number to make an odd sum Product of the person closest to you Sum of the person closest to you Difference of the person closest to you

MATH TIME  Have students design a new clock using math facts.  Example, instead of 9 show (3 x 3)  Change it up as often as you like.  You could use this for “Appointment Times” as well. Find your 10 plus 2 Find your 3 times 3

LAST ONE STANDING  Assign each student a number  Question ideas: Remain standing if If you are divisible by 2 If you add five to your number then your new number is larger than 10. If you are a composite number If you a multiple of 5 If you are a prime number If you are odd If you are even

FRISBEE MATH  Give each student a paper plate.  Have students number 1 to 20 or so.  Give students a problem.  Students will write down the answer.  At your say so students will throw their Frisbee.  Students will scurry to find another plate for the next problem

 Write down any set of number on index cards  If my index cards are 1, 5, 4, 5, 2, then here is a sample activity: Show 1 Say times Show 5 Say times Show 4 WHAT DOES IT EQUAL? Say divided by Show 5 Say times Show 2  You can increase difficulty and the number of cards as your students progress.

10 FINGERS “BLOB”  Allow each student to pick a number and display it on their hands.  You will say numbers and students will form groups to make those numbers.  If students cannot form a group then they are out.  For example, if I saw 10 then students here are some examples of groups: 2 times 5 7 and 3 9 and 1 etc

ANY OTHER IDEAS?  Which activity was your favorite?  Which one could you modify to meet the needs of your students?  What can I do/provide to help?

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS? Thank you!
