Henry and Becket =

Henry made Becket… Archbishop King Henry appointed Becket archbishop in 1162, after Bishop Theobald died in 1161. He thought that this would unite the Crown and the Church. &

The dispute began in a disagreement. The Question was whether bad churchmen should be tried in church court or in the king’s court. * Many people chose to be tried in the church courts * as they knew that the church would not punish by violence.

BUT the argument was mainly evolved around who was really in charge of England -

Constitutions of Clarendon No man could be excommunicated without the king’s permission The king could appoint Archbishops and Bishops That no churchman could leave the country without the king’s permission Churchmen found guilty would be tried in the king’s court. Henry II, King of England Thomas á Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury ?

So Basically… Henry wanted power …

What did Becket think? Although Becket was Henry’s best friend before becoming Archbishop, Becket now thought that the Church was more powerful than the King and so he refused to sign the Constitution of Clarendon, as Henry wanted.

Henry was getting angry and the quarrel continued. Becket fled into exile in 1164 to France, leaving Henry II to become even more angry.
