AGROFORESTRY:OPORTUNITIES for SLM Dr. Sanginov Sanginboy, GIZ, Land use planning expert, Chon-Kemin, UCA, Agroforestry workshop, 13 May 2014

Agroforestry Agroforestry is successful form of land management, land-use systems and technologies where fruit trees are used on the same land- management units as agricultural crops like wheat, forage, cotton and vegetables.

Why agroforestry important in mountain areas; Annually from erosion farmer loose 30 tons of fertile soil; Totally 100 mln tons of soil which contain 1 000 000 tons of humus, 100 000 tons of nitrogen and other nutrients

Advantages Firewood and timber; Food Product; Soil Fertility; Water Use efficiency; Nutrient use efficiency; Less pressure to forest; Better human nutrition opportunities; Erosion control in slope areas; Irrigation Erosion control in irrigated areas; Labor efficiency; Reduction of input

Advantages Salinity control Soil Reclamation opportunities; Drain the waterlogged area; Less risk to CC; Employment opportunities; Soil cover for all season; Economic Value; Wind and heat breaks;

Intercropping types; Apricot & greenhouse for vegetables; Apricot & vegetables; Apricot & cotton; Apricot & potato; Apricot & forage crops; Apricot & maize; Cherry, plum, peach, pistachio, walnut, apple and grape

Pillars ProductivitySustainability Adoptability or acceptability

Investments needed IMPROVED ACCESS TO INPUTS; IMPROVED EFFICIENCY OF IRRIGATION SYSTEMS; IMPROVED QUALITY AND COVERAGE OF ADVISORY SERVICES; RESEARCH ON DROUGHT AND FROST- RESISTANT TRESS SLM TRAINING AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT.

What need be done? investments would need to be made to improve market access. storage, processing and value-addition of agroforestry commodities. improved access to financial services, such as micro-loans; improved quality and coverage of advisory services; protection of genetic resources improved irrigation systems and efficiency; improved nursery management Production of seedlings with high genetic (stress tolerance) quality;
