Types of Waves Unit 5 Chapter 20

Types of Waves  All waves transfer energy by repeated vibrations. However, waves can differ in many ways.  The most common way to group waves is by the direction in which they move.  There are two main types of waves:  Longitudinal  Transverse

Transverse Waves  waves in which the particles vibrate in an up & down motion (Perpendicular).  made of crests and troughs  Electromagnetic waves are an example of transverse waves.

Transverse Waves

Longitudinal Waves  waves in which the particles vibrate back & forth (Parallel) along the path the waves moves.  made of compressions and rarefactions.  Sound waves are an example of longitudinal waves.

Longitudinal Waves

Transverse vs. Longitudinal Waves

Surface Waves  waves that form when transverse and longitudinal waves combine close to the boundary of two types of media  look like transverse waves but move in circles instead of up and down.  The particles move forward at the crest but backward at the trough.
