What causes the daily, monthly, and yearly patterns I see on Earth? Think about --- Relative Size Motion Distance

To Do List  Work with a partner and answer questions on your Framework of Understanding (Use ISN, Cat Events book and Sciencesaurus)  Review Quizzes  Watch “SEM System” BrainPops”  Work with a partner to play SEM System Jeopardy  Visit Mixsell’s Assignment calendar for videos & simulations  Look at your Aha Connections and review labs ISN p. 90-91

What Causes the Sun to Appear to Rise in the East and Set in the West? As the Earth rotates toward the east, it looks like the sun is moving west. As Seattle turns toward the sun and begins to enter its light, the sun seems to rise in the east. As your town begins to leave the sun's light and enter darkness, it appears to set in the west.

Shadows reveal relationships between time of day and the apparent position of the Sun in the sky. What relationships did you notice? Angle of Separation greatest at point B Shadows reveal the counterclockwise rotation of the earth Shadows change according to the time of year

We experience seasons because the Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5 degrees The earth rotates on its axis as it orbits the sun, but the axis always points in the same direction -- towards Polaris The tilt causes different hemispheres to be at different angles to the sun at different times of the year. Reason for Seasons

The Moon’s Endless Dance The percentage of the moon’s illumination as seen by earth are known as phases. The moons orbit is both elliptical and titled Sometimes the moon is closer to the earth than others

Astronomical Shadows 1. The sun, earth and moon align 2. The moon casts a shadow on part of the earth as it orbits into alignment 1 The moon must be full (the Earth must be between the moon and the sun 2 The moon must be on the same plane as the Earth
