 Study for the Final on June 9 and June 10.  Sign up for current events presentation if interested.  Optional outlines for essays due Monday.

 Do Now: Which of the following events do you think would be most likely to lead to a revolution in science? Why?: ◦ The Renaissance ◦ The Reformation ◦ The Age of Exploration

 Time period where people in Europe were thinking about the natural world and the universe in a new way (1500s-1600s).  Based upon careful observation and using new tools.

A. The Renaissance 1.Spirit of curiosity (people were questioning things). 2.Studying the world around you (not just religion) is now accepted. 3.Interest in the scientific writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans (like Aristotle). 4.Printing press is invented

B. The Reformation 1. Luther challenged the Catholic Church on its ways….if you can question religion, you can question the world around you too.

C. The Age of Exploration 1. Better navigational tools were needed to help explorers travel to new places → leads to more scientific discoveries.

A. English scientist who creates the complete set of laws of motion = the creation of Physics. B. Brought together the ideas of the scientists who came before him (Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo).

C. Newton’s findings a. Laws of Motion: Objects are always in motion b. Law of Gravity: Causes objects to fall to Earth & planets to revolve around the sun c. Laws of inertia 1. An object will remain in the same place until a force causes it to move 2. A moving object will continue to move until a force causes it to stop. Why do you think Newton’s accomplishments are considered so important in history?

D. Why is Newton’s work important? a. Showed that there are universal laws in nature that humans can figure out. b. These laws make the universe measurable and predictable. The world is like a machine → No longer a mystery! Whose accomplishments do you think are more significant: Isaac Newton or Christopher Columbus? Why?

A. Presents a procedure for investigating why things happen, for gaining new knowledge and correcting previous knowledge.

B. Developed by European scientists 1. Francis Bacon (English lawyer) – Scientists should use empiricism (observe the world, gather data, and draw conclusions). 2. Rene Descartes (French mathematician) – Use your own logic and reason to understand the natural world (“I think, therefore I am”). Data (Bacon) + Reason (Descartes) } Scientific Method!

 Ultimately, do you believe religion and science can ever go together? Does a person have to choose one over the other? Explain.
