5  Why did Britain lose? 1. Distance 2. Time 3. Terrain 4. Allies 5.Tactics How would the long distance between Britain and the US affect Britain? How would the time for reports and orders to reach British troops in America affect Britain? Why would the size of America and the vast plains and mountain ranges pose a problem to the British? Why would America’s allies and Britain having no allies be a problem? Why did Americans use lots of guerrilla tactics?

6  Why did Britain lose?  Distance  Time  Terrain  Allies  Tactics DISTANCE 1.America was 3000 miles away from England. 2.It took a long time to ship troops and supplies to America

7  Why did Britain lose? Distance Time Terrain Allies Tactics TIME 1.Contact between England and the battlefront was delayed by weeks because messages had to travel by ship across the Atlantic Ocean. 2.Contact between the Americans was much faster because messages did not have to travel that far.

8  Why did Britain lose? Distance Time Terrain Allies Tactics TERRAIN 1.The 13 Colonies were very large and the British could not control the area with ease.

10  Why did Britain lose?  Distance  Time  Terrain  Allies  Tactics TACTICS 1.The Colonists often used guerrilla warfare tactics. 2.Guerrilla warfare was about hit and run attacks. 3.The British Soldiers were not prepared for this type of warfare.

11  1.The British finally surrendered their forces during the Battle of Yorktown. We will learn more about Yorktown during the next lesson. 2.
