1. GCSE HOME ECONOMICS Textiles is a fun practical based course which will build on and develop textiles skills from Key Stage 3. It is concerned with designing and making a range of textiles items, e.g. bags, soft furnishings and garments using a variety of textiles resources. Students will be given the opportunity to use computerised sewing machines, fabrics, decorative products, e.g. ribbons, buttons and paints to enhance the products made. There are opportunities to competences using different types of sewing machines available, for example,,standard, overlocker, computerised, and CAD-Cam.

2. Course details There are 2 units of study to be covered: Unit 1—Principles of Textiles and Fashion This will develop and affirm knowledge of all the content delivered via practical work and set tasks. Unit 2—Textiles and Fashion This will allow the opportunity for students to acquire a wide range of practical skills linked to creative textiles, fashion design and manufacture and gain an understanding of fibres and fabrics, textile design, construction techniques and consumer choice. The required knowledge for each section will be gained through written work - classwork and set tasks, folio work, practical work, e.g. trialling and testing, textiles experiments and research via visits, e.g. The Clothes Show and use of internet sites, etc.

3. Summary of Assessment Unit 1: Principles of Textile and Fashion (40%) Written Paper: 1 ½ hours 80 marks (80 UMS) One paper which will be externally set and marked, targeted at the full range of GCSE grades. The paper will contain short-answer, structure and free response questions drawn from all areas of the specification and will assess the quality of written communication. Unit 2: Textiles and Fashion Practical Tasks (60%) Controlled Assessment 120 marks (120 UMS) Task 1: (20%) One task to be selected from a bank of three tasks set by WJEC to include investigation and production. Duration: 10 hours to be carried out within the centre. Internally assessed using WJEC set criteria and externally moderated. Task 2: (40%) One task to be selected from a choice of two tasks set by WJEC to include researching, planning, making and evaluating. Duration: 20 hours to commence in the second half of the course. Internally assessed using WJEC set criteria and externally moderated.

4. 5. Year 11 September –March Theory –Consumerism and Consumer choice Practical : Controlled Assessment Task 2 (20 hours ) April – June Revision and past papers to extend and reinforce knowledge

6.
