2 What is Electricity?  Electricity is a form of energy that is created by the flow of electrons

4 Power Plant to Customer  First electricity is generated at a power plant, wind farm, or generating station  Voltage of electricity is increased at the voltage station  Electricity is transferred across transmission lines  The voltage of the electricity is decreased at the local transformer station  Electricity is carried to your neighborhood on power lines  Before entering your home the voltage is decreased on the pole transformer on your house

5 How is electricity created?  In an atom there are protons and electrons, normally the number of negatively charged electrons is equal to the number of positively charged protons  If an atom looses a proton or electron an electric current is produced

6 Words to know  Electricity: a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles.  Circuit breaker: an automatic device for stopping the flow of current in an electric as safety measure.  Fuse: a safety device consisting of a thin strip of metal that melts and breaks an electric circuit if the current exceeds a safe level.

10 Circuit Breakers, Fuses and Surge Protectors  Surge protectors allow power to be removed without interrupting power of other devices  If a component fails inside the protector only the protectors breaker will fail not the other loads  Circuit breakers protect an electrical current form damage or over load  Fuses are used in cars, computers and most major appliances  They protect the wires transmitting an electrical current

15 Series vs. Parallel Circuits  Two of the simplest components in an electrical circuit  A series circuit is composed and connected in a series  However, one connected completely in parallel is called a parallel circuit

Direct Current  Alternating  Safe to transfer over long city distances  Electrons change directions  Reverses direction when flowing in a circuit  Direct  Voltage of current can not travel long distances until it starts to loose energy  Electrons move move consistently in a forward motion  Flows in one direction in a current

17 Batteries In electricity, a battery is a device consisting of one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy onto electrical energy electricity. Batteries have become a common power source for many household and industrial appliances. There are primary batteries which are only to be used once and secondary batteries which can be recharged.
