Sustainability Development Indicators Created By : Ali Alghazwi, Saif Alsayed IS 459 Dr. Paul Safonov

Introduction Sustainability, achieved through the processes of Sustainable Development, has emerged as an important goal over the last 20 years. Definition of sustainable Development : Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland Commission) Sustainable development integrates: economic development, social development and environmental protection. Environmental indicators: are simple measures that tell us what is happening in the environment.

Why is it important Sustainable development has three overarching objectives and essential requirements: – Poverty reduction – Changing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. – Protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development.

Environmental indicators National government and international agencies need to know how the environment is affected by development. Us has been spending about 7%of GDP for defense and about 2 % for environmental protection. Us corporations spend a lot of money on improving the quality of the air and water.

Benefits of environmental protection and sustainable Environmental protection and sustainable development is very important for all creatures living on the planet Earth Take an example of Environmental Benefits of Wind Energy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqXtUUo_B1M

How best to describe the environment There are three major types of issues require indicators : First Type, Brown Issues. Deals with conventional pollution issues. (urban, Rural,Industry,Argiculture,Mining,Forestry and nonpoint sources of pollution) Second Type, Green Issues: Environmental and ecological issues (Biological diversity, soil and land conservation, aquatic ecosystem). Third Type, Red Issue : Deal with environmental policies, institutions and legislation.

Metrics of Measurement 1) Nominal Scales: Involves separating and classifying the objects to be measured into distinct categories and that counting the members of each category e.g. species of birds. 2) Ordinal scales: Objects are assigned to classes, and the classes are ranked with respect to one another. 3) Interval and ratio scales: Highest level of measurement. E.g temperature, for instance, is an interval scale. We can observe the differences between cool and warm temperatures and measure the magnitude of that difference.

Indicators of sustainable development often integrate economic, social and environmental statistics, e.g. – Resource efficiency indicators integrate economic and environmental statistics; – Gender employment indicators integrate economic and social statistics; – Air pollution indicator integrate social and environmental statistics; – Indicator on sustainable resource management integrate all three dimensions, but are often not fully developed.

The process of indicator development is as valuable as the indicators we produce. Experts, decision makers, and the public should work together in a participatory process. Indicator selection is a process that requires broader consensus on goals. We are what we measure. We need to measure what we want to be. We are more likely to become what we can agree to measure. We need to agree on what we want to become.
