Weather and Climate Evidence for and against climate change Is global warming really happening? Is global warming really happening? Possible causes of global warming Possible causes of global warming World and UK temperatures for the last 100 and 1000 years World and UK temperatures for the last 100 and 1000 years

Is our climate changing? This graph shows the re-constructed global temperature over the last 2000 years. It has been done using different measures e.g. records, ice cores, tree rings and pollen Scientist and Geographers know the climate has been changing in the past because Britain has had several periods of glaciation but also times when the climate has been warmer and colder than average. The Little Ice Age (1550 – 1750) and the Medieval Warm Period are evidence of smaller fluctuations in our climate that happened before cars and power stations began pumping tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere.

Over the last century there have been significant changes … Since 1850 measurements of global temperature have been done using thermometers giving us the most accurate information about climate change. Average global temperatures have risen by 0.74ºC during the last 100 years and 0.5 ºC since 1980! Q1. Describe the trend of Global Air temperature between 1850 and 2010 (4) Q2. Why are scientists increasingly confident in the data they have about global climate change?

More evidence for Climate Change…. Q3. Read page 67 and make brief notes under the headings to explain how different sources suggest the climate is changing

Natural vs. Human Some scientists think that the warming of global temperatures is natural response to the end of the last glacial period. They argue that similar temperature patterns have been recorded over millions of years. They also claim climate shifts are linked to shifts in the Earth’s axis and orbit. Other scientists do not accept that the warming we are experiencing is natural. They blame humans for burning fossil fuels and causing the Greenhouse Effect Other scientists do not accept that the warming we are experiencing is natural. Complete Q2 from page 69 to show the causes of the Greenhouse Effect

Weather and Climate What are the effects of Climate Change? Understand how impacts will affect the UK Understand how impacts will affect the UK Understand how other parts of the world may be affected Understand how other parts of the world may be affected Understand that the affects may be positive or negative Understand that the affects may be positive or negative

Starter – What do these images have in common? And can you explain how each may be more likely, in the UK, if Climate Change happens? And can you explain how each may be more likely, in the UK, if Climate Change happens?

Climate Change and the UK 1. Using the map on Page 70 – Copy as many impacts onto your blank UK map 2. Use 2 colours and a key to show positives and negative

Task – Worldwide Impacts Now use the information on Page 71 Now use the information on Page 71 Select 2 positives and 4 negatives – Copy these under appropriate sub-headings Select 2 positives and 4 negatives – Copy these under appropriate sub-headings 1. Decide whether each is…. Social Social Economic Economic Environmental Environmental Political Political 2. Choose two positives and two negatives and explain how and why they are going bring advantages and disadvantages.

Homework Moodle (Plus what you have learnt this lesson) Moodle (Plus what you have learnt this lesson) Watch the Video on Tuvalu Watch the Video on Tuvalu Read the Article on Yorkshire Read the Article on Yorkshire Answer this question (one paragraph for, one against and then your conclusion) Answer this question (one paragraph for, one against and then your conclusion) “The UK will get off lightly compared to the rest of the world when it comes to the impacts of Climate Change” “The UK will get off lightly compared to the rest of the world when it comes to the impacts of Climate Change”

Summary What is the biggest negative impact to the UK? What is the biggest negative impact to the UK? What is the biggest positive impact to the UK? What is the biggest positive impact to the UK? What is the biggest negative impact to the rest of the world? What is the biggest negative impact to the rest of the world? What is the biggest positive impact to the rest of the world?
