e-Infrastructures in India GARUDA National Grid Initiative Indian Component in WLCG National Knowledge Network

GARUDA India National Grid Initiative Motivation – To Collaborate on Research and Engineering of Technologies, Architectures, Standards and Applications in Grid Computing – To Contribute to the aggregation of resources in the Grid Participation – 36 research & academic institutions in the 17 cities – 8 centres of C-DAC – Total of 45 institutions Connected through the NKN

1 Gbps to CERN peered to GEANT 2.5 Gbps TEIN3 to GEANT 1 Gbps GLORIAD TIFR-INDIA_CMS T2 1 Gbps to VECC RRCAT, IPR WLCG VECC/SINP-INDIA_ALICE T2

GOI approved the ten-year project to be implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC) with a budget of about 1 Billion euro. Objectives: NKN project is aimed at establishing a strong and robust internal Indian network which will be capable of providing secure and reliable connectivity. To bring together all the stakeholders from Higher Education, Science, Technology, Healthcare, Agriculture GRID Computing, e-governance. The inauguration of initial phase of the NKN with about 60 institute connections by the President of India on 9 th April, 2009.inauguration The leading mission oriented agencies in the fields of nuclear, space and defence research are the first major organisations to be connected through this network. NKN Website and Logo launching by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology and Minister of Human Resource Develoment on Feb. 5, 2011.Website and Logo launching The National Knowledge Network (NKN)

NKN Core Phase - 1 Presently, NKN is connected to Trans Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3). Similar connectivity to GLORIAD network is in the progress.

Ready Applications – Grid Computing using DAE Grid – Reactor components from IGCAR-NIC-BARC on Collab-CAD – Weather Modeling (C-DAC-IISC) on Garuda Grid of C-DAC – High Energy Physics- LHC on Regional WLCG – Weather, Astrophysics & Synchrotron on EU-IndiaGrid2 – Remote Synchrotron Experiment New applications for NKN – Eye Care: Shankar Netralaya and L.V.Prasad – Climate Change Modeling for MOES – Joint Clinic for Cancer care Tata Memorial Hospital Model Projects – Key applications to take active part in feasibility, capability and sustainability testing and ensuring effective use of high bandwidth of NKN Typical applications on NKN

NKN Model Projects Education – Amrita Vishwa Vidyalaya - Buffalo University Link – IIT, Hyderbad – Keio University Science & Technology – Remote operation of Synchrotron at Grenoble, France – Climate Change Modeling with ICTP – Astronomy Community on Gamma Ray Telescopes Data Centres – Connecting Eka supercomputer on NKN

Consolidate & enhance cooperation between European and Indian e-Infrastructures Active contribution at the India-EU Workshop on Research Infrastructures (January 2010, Delhi) Active contribution at the policy dialogue between e-IRG and the Indian e-infrastructure management Effective cooperation with GARUDA National Grid Initiative, NKN, EGI, OGF, TEIN3, WLCG

Support specific user communities Exploiting NKN-TEIN3 interconnection for LHC Data Transfer from CERN. Exploiting NKN-TEIN3-GEANT interconnection for crystallography experiments with the remote access & control of experimental facility (a beamline within the ESRF Synchrotron) in Grenoble, France directly from Mumbai, India. Enabling euindia Virtual Organisation on more than 7300 CPU- cores; More than 26 years of CPU time delivered in one year to user applications on euindia VO; Active support to user communities in Biology, Climate Change Research, High Energy Physics, Material Science.

14 Drug-resistant HIV-1 protease enzyme Good quality data collected by operating FIP beamline from BARC, India. Resolution 1.6 Å. Structure refined to Rf = 16.2% SA-OMIT map clearly shows electron density appropriate for the mutation M36I. The original amino acid M (shown in purple carbons) doesn’t fit density. The changed amino acid I (shown in yellow carbons) fits the density perfectly. M36I

LAST EVENT EU-IndiaGrid2 – TEIN3 joint event at the APAN32 opening CHAIN - EU-IndiaGrid2 Workshop on Research Applications of High Speed Connectivity Across Europe, India and the Asia-Pacific Area – To review the status and perspectives of e-Infrastructures across Europe and India showing a set of use cases including High Energy Physics, Climate Change and Material Science

Interoperability EU-INDIAGRID Project Objective Number 1) – To support the interconnection and interoperability of the prominent European Grid infrastructure (EGEE) with the Indian Grid infrastructure for the benefit of eScience applications Still one of EU-IndiaGrid2 main activities Not just a middleware problem: also a substantial effort at network level

Two Main Grid Infrastructures GARUDA National Grid Initiative – Based on GT4 Regional WLCG Now interconnected by NKN

EUIndiaGrid2 Interoperability Network Interoperability access to GARUDA nodes, originally not accessible from outside India, thanks to EU-IndiaGrid2 support Job Interoperability – Based on Gridway Demo since OGF30 (fall 2010) Support to MPI jobs on both infrastructures as required by applications – Step Forward: cooperation with CHAIN see presentation by Giuseppe Andronico at this Workshop

Joint EU-IndiaGrid2 / CHAIN Workshop Joint CHAIN/EU-IndiaGrid2 Workshop on e-Infrastructures Interoperation and Interoperability across Europe and the Asia-Pacific Region, 23/3, OGF31, Taipei
