13 G ROWTH OF THE WORLD POPULATION Why did we have this massive increase in population in the last 100 year?

14 Bo and Ella fell in love ……….. Aaahhhhhhhhhh! They got married and had 4 children.

15 All 4 of these had children of there own. 18 altogether.

16 16 out of the 18 in turn had children of there own – 76 altogether

17 And so on, and so on and so on. It has been like this all over the world for centuries. Global population

18 W HY DOES THE POPULATION INCREASE ? Population increases when the number of babies being born is greater than the number of people dying. The number of babies being born each year is called the birth rate. The number of people who die each year is called the death rate.

19 T HIS MEANS Birth rate and death rate the same: population stays the same. Birth rate more than death rate: population increases. Death rate more than birth rate: population decreases.

20 B IRTH AND D EATH RATES Birth and death rates are measured as the number of births and deaths for each 1000 of the population. The speed at which the population increases is called the population growth rate.

21 G ROUP TASK In groups of 4 you are going to discuss what factors affect birth rate and death rate. To do this you will have been given a piece of poster paper and you must divide it into 4 boxes. (see the next slide)
