The term ‘digital technology’ is used to describe the use of digital resources to effectively find, analyse, create, communicate, and use information in a digital context.

Creating learning environments that promote safe and responsible use of digital technology. Used for finding information, developing knowledge, creating content and supporting new learning. About guiding student learning in the digital world and using digital technology as a tool to enhance and develop agency in our student’s learning. Learning to use a variety of devices and software, i.e. ipads, laptops, chromebooks, Google Apps and learning websites.

-Development of student agency - Giving students choice of where, how and what they learn. -Developing Key Competencies in an authentic way. -Giving student’s agency over their learning increases student engagement and motivation for their learning. -Students take control of and manage the learning process. -Learn about time management, assess progress and reflect on the learning process effectively. -Students have access to their learning ‘any time, any place’. -Students are given responsibilities based around their learning. -Independence builds confidence and resilience.

What we use:

●We sign agreements where we AGREE to being cyber safe. ●We participate in ‘cyber safe’ lessons. ●We regularly discuss safety in the classroom. ●If we have concerns, we are able to share these concerns comfortably with our teacher. ●We say ‘NO’ to cyber bullying. ●We know that we should use the internet with our parents permission and NOT behind close doors for our OWN SAFETY. ●We know that excluding our friends from online games is a form of cyber bullying. ●We know that talking behind our friends backs on social media is not right and can sever our friendship. ●Facebook is not available to students at our school. By Todd (Year 8)

Purpose: ●To allow children to bring e-learning devices to use at school ●To increase e-learning access for all students Guidelines: ●All devices are the responsibility of the student. Insurance to be covered by the families. ●Devices must be clearly named, and registered with the teacher. ●Only the device owner is to use their device. ●Devices are to be used for school purposes only. Personal use, whilst at school is not acceptable. ●Devices must support classroom activities. ●Students and parents to sign a contract agreeing to these conditions.

TIPS: Have open conversations with young people about the responsibility that goes along with ownership of a connected device. Discuss safety on the internet with your children. People use digital communications to bully and harass others - talk to your child about this challenge as soon as they start communicating online. Know what internet sites your child is using. Be familiar with them yourself. Monitor use of devices by gauging time spent on them, where children are using them and the sites they are visiting, i.e. history. Be sure to set boundaries around online use. Promote openness to view children’s gmail, google classroom, phone history etc. GREAT WEBSITE: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/

In Takahe and Hoiho classroom, we have students on devices ready to show you their digital learning in practice. Feel free to roam around the students and ask them any questions you have about their day to day online learning.
