5 The Commuter Train Network in 1998 – SuperVia SuperVia’s network covers 11 counties with 89 stations. Its area of influence, that is, persons who reside within 1 km of a station, includes 6 million residents, or, 52% of the population in the metropolitan area.

6 The Privatization and the Concession Operators The Rio de Janeiro State Government privatized the rail-based urban transportation systems in 1998 in order to improve the State’s financial condition. At the time of the privatization, both operations consumed significant subsidies. Start Up: Metrô Rio – April 5 th, 1998 Objective: Management of the operations and maintenance of Line 1 and Line 2 of the Rio de Janeiro subway system for 20 years, renewable for an equal period SuperVia – November 1 st, 1998 Objective: Management of the operations and maintenance, preceded by investments, of 6 branches of the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area commuter railway system for 25 years, renewable for an equal period

8 Benefits to the Rio de Janeiro State Taxpayers The State Government is no longer required to direct US$ 280 million in annual subsidies to support the operation of the two rail systems. In addition, the concession fees due to the Government generate annual revenue of US$ 18 million which contributes to fund other programs of the State Government’s budget.

Consequently, to increase ridership, SuperVia developed a integrated network ( bus & train) at 20 stations. The integrated network includes more than 120 lines, who operate more than 1.000 buses.

22 SuperVia Started negotiations with the State Government to execute a new long term investment plan for the 2008 – 2023 period (values of investments are still under negotiation) Concession term would be renewed for another 25 year period; Investments (around US$1.4 billion) would be split between the concession operator and the State Government Acquire 480 new cars Install new signaling system Refurbish all 89 stations and rehabilitate 160 old cars Implement power supply system
