1 Mongol Armies Build an Empire Genghis Khan united the Mongols, conquered the Asian steppes with his cavalry, and attacked Chinese cities with cannons. 2 China Under Mongol Rule Kublai Khan conquered Song lands in 1279. He gave military and high government jobs only to Mongols, but tolerated the customs and beliefs of the Chinese. He welcomed foreigners to his court, including Italian Marco Polo, who described the court’s wealth and splendor for Europeans. 2 of 6 The Spread of Civilization in East and Southeast Asia Section 2: The Mongol and Ming Empires The Ming Restore Chinese Rule Zhu Yuanzhang toppled the Mongols and founded the Ming dynasty. The Ming brought back the civil service. Agriculture and industry grew under the Ming and there was a revival of the arts. Ming vases were highly valued trade items. 3 Chinese Fleets Sail the Seas The Ming sent fleets to explore and trade with distant lands. The most famous commander was Zheng He, who visited many Indian and East African ports in the early 1400s.
