2. China Under Mongol Rule Kublai Khan conquered Song lands in 1279. He gave military and high government jobs only to Mongols, but tolerated the customs and beliefs of the Chinese. 3. Chinese Fleets Sail the Seas The Ming sent fleets to explore and trade with distant lands. The most famous commander was Zheng He, who visited many Indian and East African ports in the early 1400s.
