Korea Network Information Center 3 1) The Ratio of Internet Users Internet usage rate & usage number 59.4% (26,270 thousand persons) of whole population, 6 years old or over, use internet once a month or more. 2) Changes in the Ratio of Internet Users Fluctuation (%, thousand persons) 2.Internet usage rate and usage number (26,270 thousand persons) * Sampling error : ±0.965%(95% reliance range) 1.4%p(630 thousand users) has been increased compared with Jun. 2002. Internet usage rate remarkably growing has been changed to slow-down after little increase from 2002.

Korea Network Information Center 4 1) Usage Ratio by Gender and Number of Users Internet usage rate by sex Male’s internet usage rate is 65.2% (14,420 thousand persons) and female’s rate is 53.6% (11,850 thousand persons). Male’s rate has been increased by 2.2%p and female’s rate has been increased by 3.4%p compared with Dec. 2001. Number of male internet users are still bigger than number of female internet users, but deviation between sex is getting smaller due to bigger female’s increasing rate than male’s Number of internet users by sex Composition rate by sex 3. Korea Network Information Center 5 2) Usage rate & number of users by age Internet usage rate by age In viewpoint of age, those who aged 6 to 19 have the highest rate with 91.4% (8,780 thousand persons) and followed by 89.8% (7,410 thousand persons) of 20s. In Dec. 2002, compared with Dec. 2001, 30s’ internet usage rate has most increase rate relatively to other age. 40s’ rate also increase 3.7% compared with Dec. 2002 but 50s’ rate only increase 0.6%p that shows old age’s rate is still less. Korea Network Information Center 6 3) Internet usage rate by eduacational attainment Internet usage rate by educational attainment Internet usage rates among students that show 98.1% in middle school students, 97.1% in high school students, 97.5% in college students are almost full. But 91.3% of elementary school student increased compared with 2001. Adult’s rates by educational attainment show 5.1% in persons graduated from middle school or lower, 46.2% in graduated from high school, 80.0% in graduated from college or higher. It shows deviations between eduactional attainment are remarkable. (%) 4) Internet usage rate by occupation Internet usage rate by occupation Internet usage rates by occupation except student shows 81.4% in specialist/administration job, 79.7% in officer. However, the rate of above groups, as leading groups, shows similar with Dec. 2001 and seems reached almost full. On the other hand, groups in service/sales, manufacturing related, housewife, etc that had relatively less rate than other groups have increased remarkably and it helps to show increasing trend. Korea Network Information Center 7 5) Internet usage rate & number of user by city & province Internet usage rate by city & province Number of users by city & province (Thousand persons) (%) Internet usage rate in Ulsan, having 67.8% (650 thousand persons), is the highest and followed by Gyeonggi(66.9%, 5,790 thousand persons), Seoul(66.0%, 6,300 thousand persons) The usage rates have been generally increased compared with Dec. 2001. Especially, Gyeongnam shows the largest increase(6.1%p), and followed by jeju(5.7%p), Jeonnam(5.6%p), Chungbuk(5.0%p) and so on. 3. Ratio of Internet Users by usage pattern

Home internet users increased compared with Dec. 2001 while users at other places decreased. Korea Network Information Center 9 3) Main internet access method 4.Information oriented environment Internet access method at home Main access methods at home are xDSL(83.9%), Cable net(12.8%) and number of xDSL using households increased 12.5%p compare with Dec. 2001. Number of other access method such as telephone modem, ISDN, etc. are under steady decrease. The highest of rate of the internet access mehod is xDSL(62.0%), followed by leased line(24.9%), cable net(9.3%). Compared with Dec. 2001, cases of usage due to specific purposes such as ‘children’s education’, ‘homework’, ‘search information’, etc. are decreased but cases of moments due to ‘recommendation by other people’, ‘curiosity’, ‘interest’, etc. are increased. Compared to Dec. 2001, those who use interent ‘daily’ increased 9.4%p and reached 71.8%. Korea Network Information Center 12 5) Main purpose of internet usage 5.Internet usage Main purpose of internet usage (%,Overlapping response, Internet user) Main purpose of internet usage is mostly ‘mail usage’ with 76.5% and followed by ‘search simple data information’ (71.3%) and ‘game’ (44.0%) Compared with Dec. 2001, purposes for ‘search simple data information’ and ‘entertainment’ such as movie, watching TV, etc. are decrease but ‘mail usage’ and ‘chatting’ due to recent increase of messenger usage are increased. On the other hand, search areas for ‘usage of information search’ are mainly ‘study related’ 34.5% > ‘business related’ 25.3% > ‘leisure/hobby activity’ 22.3%. Korea Network Information Center 13 6) Inconvenience with internet usage 5.Internet usage Inconvenience with internet usage (%,Internet user) Responses saying ‘No’ about inconvenience with internet usage are remarkably increased and complaints have been generally decreased. Inconveniences with internet usage are ranked by ‘response speed (34.2%)’, ‘difficulty in searching information (4.0%)’, ‘expensive service charge’ (3.1%) and so on.

And then, it is followed by ‘hobby activity’ (26.0%), ‘broadcasting & entertainment’ (5.1%). Internet users registered to community sites reached 39.6% and users registered to 1-3 communities have most portion with 15.8%. Compared with other items, satisfactory level for ‘product price’ has the highest point (3.87) and ‘private information protection policy’ has the lowest point (3.13). Internet users who experienced internet shopping during the last 6 months are 31.0%. Internet shopping experienced users would use 1.4 times a month in average. Korea Network Information Center 24 1) Internet non using reason 10.Internet non- user Internet non using reason (%, Internet non user) Internet non-users would not use because they have reasons such as ‘not necessary’ (40.3%)> ‘not recognized how to use’ (31.9%)> ‘no available time’ (14.4%) and so on. Especially, compared with Dec. 2001, reason of ‘not recognized how to use’ are increased because it might come from aging of internet non-users (more than 40 years old of internet non-users: 75%) 2) Intention of internet use in the future Intention of internet use in the future 24.1% of internet non-users have intention to use internet in the future. 12.5% of persons intended to use wish to use within 6 months while 45% wish to use after one year.
