9 Where is Appalachia? Appalachia is a collection of mountains that stretches from Maine to Georgia. Many early American settlers made this region their home and farmed and cultivated the land.

11 The Periods of Appalachian Music Many music historians divide the development into two separate periods in history: Traditional Music- Anglo Celtic Ballads and dance tunes brought from European immigrants. The “Old Time” Music- Popular music made famous from 1900 to 1930 that mix traditional music with parlor style music of the time.

12 Traditional Music This early period of Appalachian music was developed from the massive amount of immigrants coming from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. This heavy use these style caused the early period to have an Anglo Celtic style to it.

13 “Old Time” Music This period was first mentions by the early American newspapers that was trying to describe the use of “fiddling and dance” music. This music saw the use of new instruments such as the Banjo and the dulcimer.

14 Instruments of Appalachian Music! The types of Instruments that could be heard in Appalachian music would be: Mountain Dulcimer Auto Harp Guitar Banjo Fiddle Mandolin String Bass Harmonica

16 Purpose of the Music As with all other forms of music, there were specific perposes for making and playing this style of music. One of the main purposes for using this music was for personal and group enjoyment. Another use for this was for the use of Church Gospel music.
