I.Biography Mark Strand (Eng. Mark Strand, April 11, 1934, Prince Edward Island - November 29, 2014, Brooklyn, New York) - American poet, essayist and translator. United States Poet Laureate in 1990.

Born in Summerside on Prince Edward Island (Canada), to a Jewish family. My father was from Cleveland and early left an orphan; mother - from New York, grew up in Quebec (first marriage was married to the poet who wrote in Yiddish Alex Kac).

Youth spent in the US, as well as in South and Central America, where the mother was involved in archaeological expeditions. In 1957 he received a bachelor's degree from Antioch College, Ohio. He studied painting at Yale University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. In 1960-1961, he was the winner of a Fulbright scholarship, under this program to learn Italian poetry of the 19th century.

In the USA, the title of poet laureate was established by legislative act of Congress in 1985. However, from 1937 to 1986 there was a consultant for the title of poetry at the Library of Congress.

The main duties of the American poet laureate - give lectures and public readings, advise the Library of Congress for its literary programs and recommend new poets who deserve to have their names entered in the archives of the Library. He receives a scholarship of 35,000 dollars a year.

III. His friend Joseph Brodsky In this capacity, he was succeeded in 1991 by his friend Joseph Brodsky, then write an essay about the work of the Strand, where he called him, and Charles Simic "poet of silence."

Essays of Joseph Brodsky on the Strand Difficult task - to represent Mark Strand, because it requires exclusion of what I love, what I have many moments of almost physical happiness - or (happiness that) the mental equivalent. I'm talking about his poetry as well as his prose - but first and foremost about poetry. The man ultimately is what he loves.

However you feel cornered, when asked to explain why we love someone and for what. In order to explain this - which is equivalent to the inevitable explanation itself - we must try to love the object of our affection a little less. I do not think I'm capable of such a feat of objectivity, I'm not even going to strive for this. In short, I am addicted to poetry, and Mark Strand, judging by how the author evolves, I expect to remain biased to the end of my days…

IV. The winner of the Pulitzer prize In 1999, Strand was also the winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer Prize (Eng. Pulitzer Prize) - one of the most prestigious awards in the US literature, journalism, music and theater. In October 1911, died newspaper magnate of Hungarian-Jewish descent Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911). According to a bequest fund was established in his name at the left for this purpose two million dollars. Testament was written August 17, 1903. This day is the date of establishment of the Pulitzer Prize. Joseph Pulitzer

V. About the Pulitzer Prize Strand is also known as a great connoisseur of art, author of several works of art, among which the book National Institute of Arts and Letters. Hopper - interpretation of art and the "narrative" content paintings of American realist painter Edward Hopper. Peru Strand also belong to children's books - Planet of Lost Things (1982), Night Book (1983) and Rembrandt walks (1986). In 2000 published a collection of essays Strand Weather words: poetic fiction. Strand is a member of the Academy of American Poets, the American Academy and the
