1 About Edgar Allan Poe - Born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts - He was orphaned when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family

2 - Poe was eventually adopted by the Allan family, hence why his name is Edgar Allan Poe - Poe married his cousin, Virginia, when he was 27 and she was only 13 - “The Raven” made Poe famous, but he only received $14 for his work.

4 - Best known for his tales of mystery and suspense, Poe is also considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre - Poe was the first well-known American writer to earn a living strictly through his writing, which resulted in a financially difficult life and career

5 - Throughout his life, Poe battled with bouts of depression - Poe had a severe drinking problem that stemmed from his bouts of depression

6 - Poe’s death (much like his writing) is shrouded in mystery - On October 3, 1849, Poe was found on the streets of Baltimore delirious, "in great distress, and... in need of immediate assistance.” – Joseph W. Walker (the man who found Poe in this condition)

7 - Poe was taken to Washington College Hospital, where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849, at 5:00 in the morning - Poe was never coherent long enough to explain how he came to be in his dire condition and, oddly, was wearing clothes that were not his own.

8 - While speculation about Poe’s cause of death includes heart disease, epilepsy, cholera, and rabies, his actual cause of death remains unknown. - All of Poe’s medical records, including his death certificate, have been lost.

10 - “Avi” is the pen name for Edward Irving Wortis, an American author of young adult and children’s literature. - Avi was born in New York City on December 23, 1937.

11 Avi has written more than 70 books. He has written books for different age groups and in many different genres including historical fiction, fantasies, comedies, mysteries, ghost stories, adventure tales, realistic fiction, and picture books.

12 Avi has won numerous awards for his books, the most notable being a Newbery Honor for The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle in 1991, and another for Nothing But the Truth in 1992. Additionally, his fiftieth book, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, was awarded the Newbery Medal in 2003.

13 - The Man Who Was Poe is Avi’s ninth novel. - Avi (who will soon turn 75) currently resides in Denver, Colorado with his wife, Linda Cruise Wright.
