2 Entry #1:Tuesday March 2016 Write the day and date at the left side top of a new page in your reflections notebook— On the left side: On the right side: Find a passage in the pages that you have read so far that contains a flag word. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “With apprehension mounting, Charlie stepped into the unknown” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Draw a meaning picture to go along with the word. Example: *The word means nervous or anxious. In this sentence, the worry is increasing. Someone who was apprehensive might be scared about doing something. 2 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

A “show you know” sentence clearly lets the reader see the meaning of the word. It’s okay to use a variation of the word; in fact, it shows you really get it! Write that person’s name going down the left side of the paper. For each letter, write an adjective that describes the character. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “His fortitude in a tough situation was well-known” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Who might use this word in real life? When might this word be used? Why did the author choose this word? What other words might be used with this word? Example: The author used this word once before with courage. I think it means being strong and tough. It could be used to describe an athlete in sports or when someone is facing a tough challenge. The author probably used this because it gets a reader to pay more attention than just saying a normal word like strength. I think some words or phrases that go with this might be— Being tough Not giving up Determined Stubborn Having guts (or braveness, courage) 11 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

13 ACCORDION BOOKMARK REQUIREMENTS: The bookmark will have eight (8) panels. The cover panel must include the title of the book, the author, a background picture representing the content of the novel, and your name. The back panel of the bookmark must include mini-poster of any word you think represents the big ideas in this novel. Try word art with the “theme” word. Visualize the bookmark and pages like this: 13 Sketch showing the word’s meaning: The Word The passage where the word is located in the book. ”Be sure to use MLA format like this” (Last 33).
