DO NOW – TRIVIA TUESDAY What word, which could be defined as “a small object of little value,” is one of a very few words in the English language that has consecutive k’s in it?

INTRO TO TRIG 3/28/2016

TODAY’S OBJECTIVE/THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE SWBAT find values of the slick six trig functions for acute angles. Monday – Intro to Trig Tuesday – Solving Right Triangles Wednesday – Solving Right Triangles Thursday – Special Right Triangles Friday – Right Triangle ACT Practice

WHY TRIGONOMETRY? Hypothetically, it’s the 3 rd century BC. Rome is in charge, and there’s not a whole lot else going on. You are an astronomer, and need to determine how far away the stars are, because you rely on them for both navigation and your calendar. How do you figure this out?

WELL, HERE’S WHAT THEY DID. These astronomers notes that the lengths of the sides of a right-angle triangle and the angles between those sides have fixed relationship: that is, if at least the length of one side and the value of one angle is known, then all other angles and lengths can be determined algorithmically. Independently, Chinese mathematicians developed trigonometry, though it was not a major field of study for them.

MORE HISTORY Driven by the demands of navigation and the growing need for accurate maps of large geographic areas, trigonometry grew into a major branch of mathematics. Bartholomaeus Pitiscus was the first to use the word, publishing the book Trigonometria in 1595.
