Team Building Project Design and Development Storyboard 1

What is the Project? The project is an online resource for lecturers who wish to utilise group work in their teaching. 2

Why did we pick this project? We chose this topic because we currently use group work in our own teaching and are aware of the challenges and complexity involved. We saw the opportunity to develop a resource that would support our own teaching and that of others. There is a gap in availability of team building resources. Comments and discussion points are included in the notes section of these slides. 3

What the experts say about group and team work Important transferrable skill essential to many employers* Increasingly common at third level Encourages co-operative learning and has many benefits Pedagogy – Learning activities were developed after research into group work literature. 4 * Flash Eurobarometer report (2010): Employers Perceptions of Graduate Employability

Who will use this resource? The resource is designed to be used by the instructor as a tool for introducing the concept of group work to learners. The learner is a third level student who is required to work on projects in groups. It is to be used at the early stages of group work, but Instructors may choose to use the resource in stages, as issues arise. 5

Overall Learning Objective for Instructor To enable the learner/student to work effectively in a group situation 6

Learning Outcomes for Learner The learner/student will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which groups can be formed Identify the challenges and advantages of working in groups Identify the characteristics of a good team member Develop ground rules for their group Identify and consider the conflicts that can occur in groups and consider coping strategies for those situations 7

Linked Learning Activities 1.Team Formation - Presentation and exercise 2.Team Building – Team exercise and discussion 3.Rule Development – Class plans and groups exercises 4.Conflict Management – Animation and presentation 8

E-Learning Authoring Tools We considered: – Google sites – Video – PowerPoint – Flash Why we selected Articulate: – Can perform the functions required – Can embed additional tools such as Xtra-normal, video – Possible to learn it in the time-frame – Availability on a trial basis 9

Accessibility The resource is designed to be accessible to diverse users: Where applicable an audio file for each slide/section is available Subtitles/scripts are available if the audio differs from the screen 10

Proposed Site Map for the Resource 11

Resource Organisation Sections: Team Formation Team Building Exercises Rule Development Conflict Management Links to literature and web references for each section will be through attachments to the slides. 12

Team Formation Assignment structure First meeting 13

Team Formation: Group Selection Lecturer Vs student choice Comments from experienced staff: video/animation Methods of selection 14

Comments on different group sizes Recorded comments from lecturers 15 Team Formation: Group Size

Team roles Difficult personalities 16 Team Formation: Team Personalities

Team Building Exercises A wide range of team building exercises were evaluated Three alternatives are included. These are suggested for small, medium or large class sizes: – Defend the egg, Paper tower, Memory test Attached sheets give instructions about equipment, duration, floor space needed etc. Instructor clicks on the photo to link to each activity 17

Team Building Exercises: Discussion and Reflection After the team exercise, students will reflect on the activity - their individual and group approach. Then a discussion of the challenges and benefits of working in groups should be used to draw out the learning points. 18

Rule Development Rule Development is the development of principles that a group abide by to allow a productive group experience. Rule Development allows students to be active in the development of guidelines for the running of their own group. It allows students to put in place structures to support the managing of the group and to clearly state the expectations of group members. 19

Rule Development This section of the project is broken into three parts: Rule Development Overview Sample Themes Class Plans The aim of this section is to give theinstructorexamples and teaching objects to run exercises in class to develop rules for group work. The class plans utilize group discussion as their main learning tool for the students. 20

Introduction outlining team problems Basic causes of conflict are: – Communication Factors – Personality Factors – Team Structure Factors 21 Conflict Management

Conflict Management: Conflict Resolution Introduction outlining methods for dealing with conflict List 5 common methods for dealing with negative conflict Detailed information on each 22

Conflict Management: Conflict Resolution: Case Study Example Short animation on conflict Q/A and discussion examining video content 23

Implementation of Resource Considered: – Merlot repository – NDLR repository – CD Preference for NDLR: – Irish – Rapid dissemination 24

Evaluation Evaluation of the resource is conducted as follows: Developers review of each section throughout the project Tutor and peer feedback Future evaluation by users, through links: Design is an iterative process: the continuous process of rapid prototyping – ‘the process of rapidly developing an instructional treatment with the idea that use will inform changes’ (Gagné, 2005, p.3) 25
