2 Read the passage of text on the left hand side. Whilst doing so, take down any key notes or key pieces of information and be ready to feedback to the rest of the class. Fossil fuels can be extremely damaging to our environment. When burning fossil fuels many harmful gases are given off. Such as: Carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide is thought to be affecting our planet, causing something called Global warming. This is when the average temperature of the Earth gradually rises. Scientist believe that humans burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide is the main cause of global warming. Therefore we need to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we release into the environment. Student Reading Activity

9 No Green house Effect Our Planet is heated up every day by light rays from our sun. The majority of these light rays hit earth and then reflect off into space.

10 With Green House Effect Due to the large amount fossil fuels we’ve been burning our atmosphere has now become full of Carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide acts like a blanket around the earth, keeping the light rays in. These light rays return back to earth and raise the average temperature of the earth’s surface. Learning Activity

11 Lv4- Describe what the green house effect is using very basic terminology. Lv5- Explain in detail how carbon dioxide traps heat and causes the green house effect. Lv6- Link to two pictures together and explain why it is called the green house effect.

13 Plenary Write a letter to the school. Write a letter to the head teacher of the school, Mr Campbell, telling him about what you’ve learnt today and why we need to make the school more energy efficient. You may wish to include: Why we need to be energy efficient. How the school can become more energy efficient. Why you feel this is an important subject.
