BSA GET’S BAD MARKS FOR IT’S OUTDOOR PRACTICES!  US Forest Service Sierra Club National Parks Service And other outdoor conservation groups

WOW  …SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE?

BSA Works To Change It’s Ways! 1993 – A cooperative partnership was developed by a variety of representatives from the Puget Sound Area: U.S. Department of Agriculture U.S. Forest Service The Boy and Girl Scouts The Washington Wilderness Coalition

BSA Works To Change It’s Ways! The outcome was the first publication of: Scouting Ahead A Leader’s Guide to Teaching and Learning Leave No Trace

LNT Has Different Names But The Same Mission And Strategy Scouting Ahead - Leave No Trace Project Leave No Trace Leave No Trace – AKA: LNT

Before We Get Started With Our Understanding Of LNT Let’s have some fun! !

BSA’s & LNT’s Mission Boy Scouting’s mission is to instill values in our young people to prepare them to make moral and ethical choices throughout their lifetime. Leave No Trace helps reinforce that mission, and reminds us to protect the “Wilderness” and to respect the rights of other users of the outdoors for now and for future generations.

A “Wilderness,” what is it?

LNT’s Mission Is Covered By 7 Basic Principals Focusing On: Preplanning Trails and Travel People, Plants, & Wildlife Noise & Visual Pollution

LNT’s Mission Is Covered by 7 Basic Principals Campsite Selection Campfires & Stoves Heath & Sanitation

LNT Principal #1 PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE

Establish a goal for each trip Where are you going Filing needed permits Group size How are we getting there & back

PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE When are you going & coming back Food Proper clothing & gear Weather & tail conditions

PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE What is the physical condition and skill level of the participants Is there an emergency exit plan Where is the closest EMS facility

LNT Principal #2 TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES

What are some durable surfaces?

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES When Traveling: Stay on established trails Don’t shortcut switchbacks Hike in single file Stay in the middle of the Trail Snow

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Stay in the middle of watery or rutted trails to lessen erosion When crossing snow patches, follow the trail as much as possible Avoid fragile areas when saturated by heavy rain or snowmelt

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Trail Etiquette: Yield the right away to uphill hikers – step of the trial and avoid stepping onto plants Yield the right away to horses, llamas or other pack animals - MOST OF ALL follow the instructions of the rider (usually going to the downhill side of the trail).

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Trailless Areas: Strongly discouraged in frontcountry settings Stay on established trails & concentrate activities in these areas for group activities.

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Camping: Make reservations if necessary Stick to established campsites large enough for the group If none are available, erect tents over footprints on a slightly raised areas that have good drainage Look for unsafe trees - widow makers

CAMP & TRAVEL ON DURABLE SURFACES Camping: Protect riparian areas, camp 200 feet from lakes and streams Good campsite are found not made Keep campsites small – focus on areas where vegetation is absent Disperse to prevent campsite social trails Avoid places where impacts are beginning

LNT Principal #3 DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack It In & Pack It Out

DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack It In & Pack It Out! Inspect campsites for trash, and leftover or spilled food and pack it out. Deposit solid human waste in catholes, off the trail, dig a hole 6 – 8 inches deep & 200 feet from water – cover & disguise Urinate on durable surfaces or on the trail Pack out toilet paper & hygiene products

DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack It In & Pack It Out! Wash yourself & dishes 200 feet from water sources – use small amounts of biodegradable soap Dishwater containing food or food particulates should strained and packed out Broadcast strained brackish water

LNT Principal #4 LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND

Preserve The Past: Observe, but don’t touch, cultural or historic structures and artifacts Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species Don’t build structures, furniture or dig trenches

LNT Principal #5 MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS

Campfires can cause lasting impacts Use lightweight stoves for cooking Fires are permitted in established fire rings or mounded fires Burn all wood and coals to ash Put out campfires completely When cold, scatter ashes

LNT Principal #6 RESPECT WILDLIFE

Observe wildlife from a distance Never feed animals – feeding damages their health and alters natural behaviors Store your food and trash securely Control pets at all times – better yet, leave them at home Avoid wildlife during sensitive times – mating, nesting, raising young

LNT Principal #7 BE CONTIOUS OF OTHER VISITORS

Respect other visitors & protect the quality of their experience Be courteous Yield to others on the trail – “trail etiquette” Take breaks & camp away from trails and other visitors Let nature’s sound prevail & avoid loud voices and noises

An Inspirational Though “As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I’ll interpret rocks, learn that language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I’ll acquaint myself with the glacier and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can. - John Muir
