Tracy Panther Associate Dean, Student Experience Lindsay Williams Principal Lecturer, Student Experience ACP CONFERENCE 2012 THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE IN THE ACP

Brookes 2020 Strategy SESE Strategy for Enhancing the Student Experience PESE Programme for Enhancing the Student Experience

SESE at Oxford Brookes Supports the University's strategic goal: ‘We will be a university that enables a student experience of the highest standard possible’. ● We will ensure that learning and teaching are at the leading edge and relevant to contemporary contexts. ● We will provide an environment where students are proactively engaged in shaping their experience through influencing learning and extra-curricular policy, processes and outcomes.

Key principles underlying the SESE ● the importance of learning ● shared responsibility between staff and students for learning ● importance of the curriculum ● importance of continuing professional development (for staff) ● formative place of assessment ● importance of environments that support learning

Key drivers identified a challenging, relevant and internationalised curriculum implementing the ‘Brookes’ Assessment Compact’ incorporating a set of core graduate attributes into every undergraduate and postgraduate programme engaging students in the life of the University evidence-based policy development and evaluation infrastructure and services in support of learning

From SESE to PESE… One consequence of the SESE is a need to develop a programme of projects designed to deliver a distinctive Brookes student experience. You don't change culture by having a ‘culture change’ project but through having a number of projects which act as a lever requiring in themselves a change "in the way we do things round here". Key aim of the Programme for Enhancing the Student Experience (PESE): To commission and co-ordinate a series of projects which will deliver the benefits articulated within the Strategy for Enhancing the Student Experience

A university wide programme of academic related projects which span all four faculties. This programme impacts on all students spanning both Oxford Brookes and those studying Brookes accredited courses in partnership colleges. This programme also impacts on academic staff and a variety of support staff within Oxford Brookes and ACPs What is included?

Context: Changing landscape Strategic growth Existing strong partnerships Existing good (collaborative) practice Good NSS results Opportunities: To share good practice across all programmes and partners To further enhance and invest in our relationship and add value to the experience of our students within each ACP institution To ‘get more things right’ ‘PROJECT 10’

What do we mean by ‘experience’? Key milestones to the student journey E.g. IAG, enrolment/orientation, TLA, progression/alumni Establishing ‘base-line’ activities and entitlements along the journey which can help enhance the student experience Core and ‘added value’ distinctions (based on good practice) The ‘Brookes’ experience Duel-identity? Us! ‘Gatekeepers’ ‘Facilitators/ Conduits’ The staff experience

Moving forward: Scoping and talking… …capture the good practice …generate ideas to further enhance the student experience …identify areas that still need some work/clarity Key stakeholders to include…. Partner staff and students Liaison Managers Faculty staff within Brookes Development of a Student Experience Enhancement Plan, to include Core and ‘added value’ activities Opportunities for staff development

Provisional timescales: January-March Visiting staff and students at each partner college Meeting with Faculty and Directorate staff March – June Development of a draft Student Experience Enhancement Plan (for comment) Pilot ‘Enhancement Activity’ (tbc) Implementation September 2012 (tbc)

To summarise This project presents an opportunity for the University to support our college partners in enhancing the student experience across all programmes Staff (Brookes and ACP) critical to success Early stages….requires more talking Next steps: what’s working well, what needs some attention, what else could we do… Any questions?
