FAST FACTS Height: Males 8 - 9 feet nose to tail; females 6 - 7 feet Weight: Adult males 550 - 1,320 lbs (but can reach 1,760 lbs.); females 200- 700 lbs. Lifespan: 20 - 25 years Status: vulnerable

Diet Polar bears feed almost exclusively on ringed seals and bearded seals. They are also known to eat walrus, beluga whale, and bowhead whale carcasses, and bird eggs.

Polar bears are found across the Arctic. They more likely to live in areas with annual sea ice and productive seal populations. The five nations with a polar bear population are the U.S. (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway. Habitat

Polar Bears are often located near areas of water and ice floes where their favorite food, seals can be found. Polar Bears have dens in which they sleep and where the females will give birth to cubs. Polar Bears unlike other species do not enter true hibernation in the winter as this is a period of hunting, however, some Polar Bears and pregnant females in particular will enter a deep sleep where their heart rates will drop Habitat continued

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere act like a blanket that keeps the earth warm. This protective blanket helps make our planet habitable. Humans however have greatly increased the level of GHGs in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels like oil and coal. This is like throwing on a second blanket, causing temperatures to rise. 1.Effects of this: less ice reflecting less energy back into space More open water absorbing more heat, Warmer temperatures that thaw ancient permafrost (frozen soils), releasing yet more greenhouse gases Effects to polar bears : Reduced access to food Drop in body condition Lower cub survival rates Increase in drowning Increase in cannibalism Loss of access to denning areas Global warming affecting habitat

Since competition for females is vigorous due to the fact that the female only mates once every three years.. Before mating, a female polar bear may be accompanied by several males. The males fight fiercely among themselves until the strongest or largest male succeeds in chasing the others away. Fights are rarely fatal, but do result in broken canines and scars on the head, neck, and shoulders. Reproduction

adaptationreason 1.fur on the soles of the feet, 2.large body - gives a small surface area to volume ratio 3.large feet 4.sharp claws and teeth 5.small ears 6.strong legs for swimming and running 7.thick layer of blubber – fat 8.thick layer of white fur 1.better grip on ice and for insulation 2.reduces heat losses 3.spreads the load on snow and ice 4.catching and eating prey 5.reduces heat losses 6.helps them catch their prey 7.insulation and a store of energy 8.insulation against the cold, and for camouflage Adaptation

This article was about how some zoo keepers from a zoo in Canada are currently using glitter to gain information on where their specific polar bears are going and where they hang out. The glitter is safe to consume and is mixed into their food. Tittle of work: Researchers Are Using Glitter To Keep Track Of Polar Bear Poop By: DAVE WALSH 05.08.16 DAVE WALSH 05.08.16 Current event
