1 History of the Leider Farm By Mary Clark Minnesota Geography Anoka-Ramsey Community College Cambridge Campus

3 1889 Survey Map of Sherburne County, Minnesota Minnesota Historical Society Location of Farm The S.W. corner of section 2, is the location of the Leider farm on this 1889 Survey Map of Sherburne County. Chester and Carol Leider bought the 40 acre farm from a couple named Cric and Lily Moulder in 1958. Chester also had fulltime employment outside of farming.

4 Barn This is the original barn of the farm. It is a Yankee version barn, with a gambrel roof line. By looking at the barn, it is probably safe to say that this farm was built in the middle 1800’s. Repairs were made to the barn after purchasing the farm. A corn crib was added to the farm in 1959, which matched the barn. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

5 Source: http://blog.lib.umn.edu Crops The crops that were planted on this farm consisted of 35 acres of corn and alfalfa. In 1983, 20 more acres of crop were added to the farm.

Cattle were mostly Black Angus, with a few Holsteins. Two pigs were added to the farm in 1969. The pigs were raised by one of the sons for 5 years.

8 Horses On the Farm Lucky was the first horse on the farm. Lucky (Pinto breed) was purchased in 1965, and is the brown and white horse in the picture to the right. Ginger (not shown) followed after in 1966, and she was also a Pinto. In 1972, Indian Bell (pony of America) was added to the family and is not shown. Wink (3/4 Arabian) was purchased in 1975 and is the gray horse pictured to the top right in the ring with Lucky and Misty. Misty was the last addition to the family. She arrived in 1980, and is shown grazing with Lucky and Wink in the top right picture. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

9 Indian Bell Here is a picture of one of the daughters with Indian Bell. All of the women on the farm belonged to a saddle club. Lori (to the right) was Queen of the saddle club that year. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

12 Ben Ben is a pure bred Arabian horse. Carol, wife of Chester Leider, was the proud owner of this beautiful animal. There was also another pure bred on the farm named Grandy, who belonged to one of the daughters. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

13 Additions to the Farm The blue shed to the right of this picture was built in 1976. It was built for one of the sons for an auto repair shop. The blue hay shed in the center of the picture was built in 1978. The grain bin next to the hay shed was built in 1979. Two more corn cribs were also added to the farm at this time. 17 Lunch Wagon Shed This shed was built in 1978. It held supplies for a lunch wagon that Carol started as a small business. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

18 Family Gatherings The Leider Farm is a popular place for family reunions and family celebrations. The top right picture is a family reunoin, which is always held outside due to the large number of people. The picture on the bottom right is more recent and portrays a family gathering. 20 Out With the Old and In With the New In 1986, 10 acres was sold to one of the sons. Following in 1987, a new house was built on the farm (house on the left of picture). The old house was still in use until 1990, then it was taken down. Source: Chester and Carol Leider

24 Leider Farm Today Chester and Carol Leider are now retired and enjoy the simple life. Chester farms 15 acres for hay and rents out the remaining 30 acres. Source: Chester and Carol Leider
