Getting Organised for VCE English in Year 12 Setting yourself up to succeed

How can you avoid this situation?

Little things have a big impact… O Keep well organised and detailed notes O Why is this really important? O Your study in this subject consists of two units with specific outcomes O Unit 3: Reading & Responding; Creating & Presenting; Using Language to Persuade O Unit 4: Reading & Responding; Creating & Presenting O Your exam covers ALL 3 outcomes

How can I organise my notes? O We teach the Unit outcomes concurrently O Divide your folder / notebook up into 3 sections, titled according to the outcomes O A folder is ideal for this as you can file your handouts, completed writing tasks and feedback from your teacher in order of completion and topic O You will find this invaluable when revising for the practice exams and the October exam. You will also be able to utilise feedback provided by your teacher in the Holiday Homework, Exam Gym and Timed Writing Tasks (which are for each outcome) to complete each SAC.

Well organised notes also means that your notes are… O Dated and organised into each outcome and topic (eg. Unit 3, Outcome 1, The Complete Maus) O Annotated - this can include using Post-Its as well as written comments on the page. O Colour coded – using colour in a considered way helps you to learn key knowledge, deconstruct texts and examples, etc. O Reviewed regularly - you could use summaries and/or graphic organisers which would become part of your study notes. Think about using Inspiration via Edustar to create graphic organisers for your notes.

What else can I do? O Use a monthly, term and semester calendar. What could you use this for? O Read, discuss and use teacher feedback on Timed Writing, Exam Gym and SACs O Go to morning classes. These are run by the year 12 English teachers O Previously, classes were run two mornings from 8:00 am to 8:40 am. Monday was a catch up tutorial; Thursday was a skills specific lesson. O If you were to pay for a private tutor, it could cost about $40 per hour – we run extra classes for free! O Plan to go to once a week and at least every second week.
