Standards: map information about people, places, and environments understand the characteristics, functions, and applications of maps, globes, aerial and other photographs, satellite- produced images, and models (Taken from National Geography Standards, 1994) investigate why people and places are located where they are located and what patterns can be perceived in these locations use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we live—local, national, and global—including the distribution of people, places, and environments over the Earth’s surface. Exit Slip: Using the map of the United States, compare California’s location to the location of Staten Island. Remember to use key words. Narrative: Students have been learning about 5 themes of geography. One of the themes they have studied is location. Location can be described in 2 ways, absolute and relative. In this lesson students will define relative location and use it to describe a location in relation to another location. TIW: Define and use relative location when describing locations. Relative Location

Continue from yesterday TIW: Use Absolute Location when describing a location. EQ: How does Absolute Location help us understand the world around us? Do Now: Each person will place five ships on the intersecting spots on the top left grid. The five ships to be used are: Battleship = 5 pts, Aircraft Carrier = 4 pts, Cruiser = 3 pts, Destroyer = 2 pts, and Tug Boat = 1 pt TIW: Use Absolute Location when describing a location.

Battleship Game  A class member selected by the teacher will state an intersection by giving the latitude and longitude of the coordinate.  When the intersection is called off and your ship is there, you must consider it a direct hit by the enemy and your vessel is sunk. Place an X over it!  Once the war is over, total the number of points left on your grid based on ships not sunk. The team with the most points wins. TIW: Use Absolute Location when describing a location.

Extra Credit: TIW: Define and use relative location when describing locations. Quiz

TIW: Define and use relative location when describing locations. EQ: How does relative location compare and contrast to absolute location?
