Flood Detection/Intensity (Depth above Threshold [mm]) Global Flood Monitoring System (GFMS) U. Of Maryland (Adler/Wu) http://flood.umd.edu/ Successful Detection of Flooding in Mozambique 21 January 2013 12 GMT Global to Regional Flood Monitoring Mozambique Case, January 2013—Focus of Comparisons at Recent (4-6 March 2013) Int’l Flood Workshop at UMD

Flood Detection/Intensity (Depth above Threshold [mm]) Real-time rainfall (from TRMM TMPA) and Streamflow and flood intensity calculations (12 km) for Mozambique

Flood Detection/Intensity (depth above threshold [mm]) every 24-hrs January 17-25, 2013

Time History at a Point: Limpopo River (-25.1 S, 33.5 E) Flood Detection/Intensity (Depth above Threshold [mm])

GFMS Streamflow at 12 km and 1 km 12 km 1 km High Resolution Streamflow Routing Promises Greater Accuracy and Utility!

Global Flood Monitoring System (GFMS) a quasi-global flood detection and forecasting system using satellite rainfall and a global hydrological model University of Maryland ESSIC (R. Adler/H. Wu)  Significant progress made developing, implementing and testing prototype system using VIC land surface model and DRTR routing model, all running on UMD/ESSIC/CICS computer—see flood.umd.edu for real-time results.  Testing indicates improvement in flood POD and FAR from earlier system with generally good streamflow estimates; some indication of “too fast” flood wave and flood dissipation may lead to model adjustments for improved results. Input rain estimates generally good, but underestimation in some shallow orographic/monsoon systems. Problems with dams.  Comparison with other remote sensing flood estimates (e.g., MODIS and SAR flood maps, passive microwave flood estimates and streamflow estimates) may be start of integration of flood information activity—this system could provide base (always there).  Development ongoing for high resolution (1 km) routing and inundation mapping  Coming development: integration of NWP precipitation information, dam module.
