The Color Wheel Hue- Name given to a color that distinguishes it from other colors. Value-The lightness or darkness of a color. – Tint makes colors lighter – Shade makes colors darker Intensity- The Brightness or dullness of a color – Black and white are neutrals – Gray and beige are also neutrals in clothing

Types of Hues Primary Hues are red, yellow and blue. They cannot be made from any other colors. Secondary Hues are orange, green and violet (purple). They are made by mixing to primary hues together. Intermediate (or Tertiary) Hues result when equal amounts of adjoining primary and secondary colors are combined. Ie. Blue-Violet

Warm Colors- red, orange and yellow. – They give a feeling of activity and cheerfulness. – If overdone, they can give a nervous impression. – Warm colors, white and light colors make the body look larger. – They appear to advance or come toward the observer. Cool Colors- green, blue and violet. – They give a feeling of quietness and restfulness. – If overdone, they can be depressing. – They make the body look smaller. – They appear to recede or back away from the observer.

Color Schemes Monochromatic is a one-color plan that uses different tints, shades and intensity of the same hue. Analogous uses neighboring, or adjacent colors on the wheel. Complementary uses opposite hues on the color wheel. Split Complementary uses three colors. It combines one color with two colors of it’s complement. Triad combines three colors equidistant on the wheel. Accented Neutral combines white, black, gray or sometimes beige with a bright color accent.

Using Colors in Clothing Black is good for formal wear. It is sophisticated. Brown is casual, natural, and informal. Navy looks good on almost everyone. It is good for sportswear or classic styles. Beige and gray give a professional or tailored image. They are quiet and unassuming, and they can be accessorized well.

White looks good with all colors. Off-white is better for most people than pure white. Red, green and blue have many tints, shades, and intensities that make these hues suitable for almost all occasions. Yellow is good for casual, fun clothes, but is not pleasing with many skin tones. Bright colors are fun for active sportswear or as accents with neutrals.
