2 The Assessment Assessment: “A Class Pizza Party!” Assessment Type: Math Project Population: This assessment can be modified to fit grades 3-5 Areas of Measure: This assessment measures multiplication and division in a real world setting. Common Uses: To measure a student’s ability to compute multiplication and division problems. Scoring Procedure: Rubric

3 Steps o Goal: Provide an answer as to how many pizza and bottles of soda will be needed for a class party. o Step 1: Provide the student with the instructional handout, which outlines the following: o The number of people each pizza will serve. o The number of people each bottle of soda will serve. o The cost per pizza. o The cost per bottle of soda. o Step 2: Have the student calculate the appropriate number of pizzas and bottles of soda needed. Once the student has accomplished this step, have the student calculate the cost of the party. To incorporate division into the assessment, have the student figure out the amount of money needed per student to have the party. o Step 3: Have the student present their conclusions to the teacher, assess the student based on the rubric provided.

5 Demonstration Class Composition: 19 Students, 1 Teacher How many people does 1 pizza?: 4 people How many people does 1 soda bottle serve?: 5 people Cost Per Pizza: $7.00 Cost Per Soda Bottle: $2.00

6 Demonstration How many pizzas will I need? – Each pizza serves 5 people. – There are 20 people coming to the party. – 20 / 5 = 4 – We will need 4 pizza. What will my total pizza cost be? – Each pizza costs 7.00 – $7.00 x 4 Pizzas = $28.00 – The total cost for pizzas will be $28.00

7 Demonstration How many bottles of soda will I need? – Each bottle serves 4 people. – There are 20 people coming to the party. – 20 / 4 = 5 – We will need 5 bottles of soda. What will my total soda cost be? – Each bottle of soda costs $2.00 – $2.00 x 5 Bottles= $10.00 – The total cost for soda will be $10.00

8 Demonstration What is the total cost of the party? – The total cost for pizzas will be $28.00 – The total cost for soda will be $10.00. – $28.00 + $10.00 = $38.00 – The total cost of the party will be $38.00 How much money would each person need to bring in order to cover the cost of the party? – There are 20 people coming to the party. – The total cost of the party will be $38.00 – $38.00 / 20 people = $1.90 – If each person contributes $1.90, the cost of the party will be covered.
