11. Dialogues and passage analysis ⒈ joint a. 共同的 ，共有的 e.g. a joint venture(enterprise) 合资企业 This is our joint bank account.

12. 2. hope/wish a) 两者之后都可接不定式或定语从句， 意为 “ 想 ”“ 希望 ” 。对于有可能实现的希望 用 hope; 只表示愿望而不考虑实现的可能 性或对于不可能实现的主观愿望则用 wish. e.g. He hopes to become a doctor. I wish to go. I wish I were a bird.

13. b) Wish 后接含不定式作宾补的复合宾语， 而 hope 则不行。因此， She wish sb to do sth.( ∨ ) Sb hopes sb to do sth.(×) e.g. Do you really wish me to do the job. We wish the matter to be settled as soon as possible. c) Wish 可接双宾语，表示祝愿； hope 不行。 e.g. I wish you success. I wish you a happy New Year.

14. 3. be about to do sth. 表示马上要发生的事， 等于 Be on the point of “ 正要 ” ，比 be to 表示的时间更为迫切。 e.g. Look! The race is about to start. I was about to leave when the telephone rang.

15. ⒋ rather…than 是 …… 而不是，应 …… 而 不应 e.g. His age would be rather over thirty than under it. This is rather for father to decide than for you.
