3 What will we be learning about during this unit? 6) The internet and democracy / power 7) The mass media and deviancy (amplification / moral panics) 8) The mass media and violence 9) The role of the media in socialisation and identity 10) Key definitions / concepts.

4 What does mass media mean? The forms of communication (media) that reach large (mass) audiences.

5 Task!! Write down as many forms of mass media that you can think of in the first box on P.3.

8 5 main uses of the media Sources of information, entertainment and leisure activity for large numbers of people. A form of informal education. Helps to influence a person’s opinions and attitudes. Helps to shape / explore a person’s identity. Helps a person to learn about what is going on in other parts of the world.

9 Censorship When certain parts of the media is censored. This means that certain information has been banned or cut out of publication.

10 Mass Media and the Law The laws of libel The Official Secrets Act Defence or “D” notices The Race Relations Act The Obscene Publications Act Contempt of Court

11 The laws of libel Stops the publication of an untrue statement about a person that could lead to them being mocked or disliked in society.

12 The Official Secrets Act It is a criminal offence to report about any government activity, which the government defines as an official secret, without the government’s permission.

13 Defence or “D” notices Issued by the government to journalists. The journalists are requested not to report certain news items that are “against national interest”.

14 The Race Relations Act Bans the printing of opinions that will encourage hatred or discrimination against people because of their race.

15 The Obscene Publications Act Bans the printing of anything regarded as being obscene and indecent, and likely to “deprave and corrupt” the public.

16 Contempt of Court Bans the reporting of opinions about cases which are in the process of being dealt with in a court of law. This is to stop the jury from forming opinions about a case before they have heard the evidence.
