Mullard Space Science Laboratory October 2008 A.N. Fazakerley, I Rozum, C. Anekallu, H. Bacai MSSL-UCL CAA PEACE Team Status

MSSL Talk Outline Status of open action items Status of dataset production Status of calibration activities Status of cross-calibration activities Data delivery plan, data from 2006-2009

MSSL Open Action Items Cross-Cal Meeting 7: AI-3 : why do WBD densities sometimes disagree with PEACE densities? All such events were analyzed together with Ondrej Santolik during visit to MSSL. We agreed that all these intervals have unreliable WBD densities and should not be used for comparison studies. CLOSED

MSSL Status of PEACE data products delivery See presentation at May 2008 Review, no new data delivered since then, by agreement with CAA, while new production software is developed (Status in May shown in appendix slides if needed) Progress since then: – Completion of PITCH_FULL software (except status data) – Completion of PITCH_3D software (except status data). The files are very large so we recommend that this is used as an on-demand script at CAA – Testing of PITCH_SPIN, PITCH_FULL, PITCH_3D and plotting within “plotcf” – Development of status information for Moments and PITCH-family products (incomplete) – Code also renames some non-science products and replaces p.a. with noise level in particle distribution datasets – Aiming to deliver this code within 1 or 2 months (testing is delayed by MSSL computer problems) Practical problems: – difficulty calibrating C3-LEEA and C4-LEEA, – difficulty due to broken anode in C3-HEEA

MSSL Status of PEACE data products delivery Dataset production for Moments (done at MSSL) is also on hold, due to MSSL computer system problems Provision of 2006 Moments datasets: Bad C3 HEEA anode problem from August 2005 C4-LEEA calibration problem after May 2006 Provision of 2007 datasets as 2006 except Bad C3 HEEA anode problem C3-LEEA calibration problem after April 2007 EFW potential data availability problem – currently there is no CSDS PP data after July 2007, and also none for June 2007 “plotcf” and “CAApeacemoments” software release via CAA can be discussed at the November meeting

MSSL Status of PEACE calibrations Most recent calibration release : v5.1 For Jan 2001 – May 2007 –except for C3 LEEA where validity ends at 2007-04-10 –except for C4 LEEA where validity ends at 2006-05-16. –All 3D & Pitch Angle data use alpha factors applied to geometric factors accounts for varying MCP sensitivity –Products with inter-anode calibration (gives improved velocity vector): 3DR, 3DXP –Products with no inter-anode calibration: 3DX, LER, PITCH_SPINAV, PITCH_FULL (PAD family)

MSSL Status of PEACE calibrations Next calibration release : v5.2 For 2001 – 2007 –Still not solving problems with C3 LEEA and C4 LEEA –Revised inter-anode calibration available for 3DR and 3DXP products –This work has been ongoing in last 6 months –We aim to release v5.2 VIDFs in the end of November (stable computer system permitting) Future plans: for next 6 months Extend calibration at current level to include 2008 data Work on problem areas

MSSL Cross-calibration activities Support from other instruments for cross-calibration studies PEA-WHI : density comparison in the magnetosheath, solar wind and in the colder, denser magnetotail plasma-sheet We will use the complete set of 2006 magnetosheath density data as soon as it is available, to support our verification of our v5.1 calibration and to help deal with the C4-LEEA problem. Similarly 2007 dayside data. More plasmasheet data would be helpful (but we recognise that these are provided on a best efforts basis) PEA-WBD : density comparison in the hotter, less dense plasma-sheet & lobes Very few events have so far been studied, more would be helpful (but we recognise that these are provided on a best efforts basis) PEA-CIS : (V  ) z comparison We need to extend our comparison dataset beyond 2004; ideally we’d use CAA CIS moments (but these are apparently unavailable past 2004) PEA-EFW/FGM : (V  ) z comparison These data are produced at CAA. Extension of the dataset beyond 2004 would be very helpful

MSSL Cross-calibration activities Support to other instruments for cross-calibration studies EDI-PEACE : to do EDI ambient mode calibration against PEACE we have provided Edita with access to tool to generate PITCH_SPIN for any intervals of interest. future work may use PITCH_FULL if high time resolution is needed

MSSL Data Delivery Plan Schedule Requirement. – Deliver 2006, 2007 data with calibrations/docs June 2008 - May 2009 – Deliver 2008, 2009 data with calibrations/docs June 2009 - May 2010 – Completion (final calibrations, documentation, review) June 2010 - Nov 2010 Schedule Outlook. – Critical path item at present is new software release, which has been delayed due to problems with provision of code for generation of some specific status information and due to MSSL computer problems throughout the summer/autumn affecting testing. Current target data for release is November, assuming computing issues are resolved soon (could be that we would release a version with incomplete status generation code) – Provision of data for 2006 then depends on CAA production schedule, and stability of MSSL database – Calibrations are available for most sensors to May 2007 already. Extension of calibration depends on PEACE team and also timeline of availability of supporting datasets such as WHI density and EFW potential. – Provision of data for 2007 thus depends on calibration extension to end 2007, availability of EFW potential and CAA production schedule

MSSL Additional issues Personnel: Dr Bacai has resigned (maternity-related) and Mr Anekallu will do so (to take up a PhD course), thus the CAA post is being readvertised Software development: will need to adapt software for new single-sensor PAD product increasingly used during single sensor operations on PEACE during post-2005 period, and possible alternating preset single sensor operations Unusual situations – perigee crossing data: Desirable to include data with penetrating radiation signatures removed (when possible). Unusual situations – data glitches: Desirable to investigate if it is possible to reduce the impact of (occasional) data glitches; 16 bit resynch; bit-flip etc.
