16 Transportation Most Germans use public transportation but do own cars. Cities have large streetcars and subways. Germans not allowed to drive until 18 Autobahn- road with no speed limit.

17 Children in Germany Soccer favorite sport of Germans. Kids do not play sports in School. They go to after-school club for sports. Computers and video games are liked among German children. Also play lots of checkers and chess.

18 Schools in Germany Children must start by age 6. After 4 years students get 4 options. a. 1 st option-Gymnasium like high school to prepare for college. Must pass test to go to college. b. Hauptschule- to prepare for a job in industry. c. Realschule- training for the business world. Can’t get a job without going through right program

19 German foods Germans eat a lot of Sausage made from chicken or beef. Noodles with different meats is a favorite dish. Breakfast includes milk and rolls with butter and jam. Dumplings and fresh baked bread Also consume a lot of Cheese Beer is a favorite drink among Germans. Drinking age is 16 in Germany.

22 Holidays Christmas holidays are most popular. Children open presents on Christmas eve. Christmas day spent with the family. Day after Christmas is spent visiting others

23 We went to Aldi on Saturday and picked up some German Christmas goodies: Lebkuchen (german ginger bread) and Lebkuchen heart cookies, "Domino-Steine", which are little chocolate-covered cubes with a layer of jam, marzipan & lebkuchen, A German Stollen, which is a type of cake traditioanlly eaten at the time of year, and some other German chocolate. They only had one brand whereas in Germany there would be different brands of Lebkuchen-hearts etc..and you'd shop around till you find your favorite. That being said so far everything we have tried has tasted pretty good and it was all pretty cheap, since it was from Aldi's.

29 History of Germany Germany was defeated in World War I and World War II. The Holocaust was carried out by Hitler and his Nazi party during WWII. Germany was divided into east and west after WWII, a wall created through the city of Berlin to divide it. The Berlin wall was torn down in 1991 after the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union.

33 Economy Very strong economy Agriculture- harvest wheat, barley, potatoes, sugar beets. Industry- make cars, steel, cement, aluminum, tools, and TV’s. Germans use the Euro as their form of currency. It is found throughout most of Europe.
