Benefits are generally payable for 15 years following release from active duty. Some servicemembers may be eligible to transfer all or some unused benefits to their spouse or dependent children. The Department of Defense determines eligibility. Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB-AD) For active duty members who enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months and are then entitled to receive a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation. Eligibility normally ends the day the servicemember leaves the Selected Reserve. Chapter 1607 – Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) Educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency declared by the President or Congress. Children generally must be between 18 and 26 years of age. Benefits for spouses typically end 10 years from the date VA found the veteran eligible or from the date of death. Benefits for surviving spouses of servicemembers who died on active duty end 20 years from the date of death. Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship) Provides Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to the children and surviving spouses of servicemembers who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001.
