CELLS Structure and Function Ch. 1

What are they? Building blocks of life Very tiny –Cannot be seen without a microscope usually

History First microscope invented in late 1500’s Cells not observed until 1663 by Robert Hooke Looked at cork

Robert Hooke

History Around the same time, Anton van Leeuwenhoek was using a microscope Looked at pond water Saw one-celled organisms that moved Later was first to see bacteria

Van Leeuwenhoek

History Much was not understood about cells until the 1800’s Schlieden –Proved all plants are made of cells Schwann –Proved all animals are made of cells Virchow –Proved new cells come only from other cells

Cell Theory 1.All living things are made of cells At least one Different sizes All same basic structure

Cell Theory 2.Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things How living things are made is based on the cell How living things carry out the processes of life is based on/in the cell

Cell Theory 3.All cells are produced from other cells Cells cannot come from nothing Cells cannot assemble on their own Cells cannot come from nonliving things

Microscopes Several types Light microscopes –Uses a lens or lenses to bend light and magnify objects –Simple = one lens What Hooke et al. used –Compound = several lenses Greater magnification

Light microscopes

Microscopes Electron Microscopes –Shoots beams of electrons at objects –Produces a greatly magnified image –Can be 3-D –Can see internal cell structures

Electron Microscope

Microscopes Scanning Tunneling Microscope –Also uses electrons –Can magnify enough to see individual molecules

Microscopes Resolution is important too Determines how much detail you can see Higher resolution = more detail visible Like a digital camera
