2. What do we do this term? You are now about to embark on your controlled assessment tasks. You will have to answer 2 questions They require you to use sources of evidence and some own knowledge You will do the planning and preparation in class and at home You will do the actual writing up on computers in exam (‘controlled’) conditions in school

3. So what it’s on? Part A Select any 5 sources from your pack. How useful and reliable are these sources in explaining what conditions in the trenches were like? 4. FAQ Where do I get the sources from? They are all in the booklet you are given Can I choose my own sources? Yes but only when given permission from your teacher. Most people just use the ones in the booklet How long do I get to write it? You will have 2 hours to write part A and 3 hours to write part B. this will be approx. one month apart. Can I use my notes when I am writing it ? Yes you can take everything into the exam room with you apart from a draft answer! How much is it worth? 25% of your final grade

Including occasionally work that I will need done the following lesson. You will need to conduct some of your own research outside of lesson for your controlled assessment. Remember this is your chance to do your very best and gets marks in the bag!

18. Valentine Strudwick, who died at the young age of 15 on 14 January 1916. His local paper wrote: 'Pte Valentine Joe Strudwick of the 8th Rifle Brigade, joined up twelve months ago, and at the time of his death...had not reached his sixteenth birthday... a fine example of those maturer years who have not yet joined up...'

19. Conscription - 1916 The Military Service Act of January 1916 specified that single men between the ages of 18 and 41 were liable to be called-up for military service unless they were widowed with children or ministers of religion. Conscription started on 2nd March 1916. The act was extended to married men on 25th May 1916.
