Planning and Creating a Web Site

Stages in planning a web site planning the project decide on the purpose and audience for the web site create mind map to record all your ideas create and gather content (text and images) create an outline of what will be included decide on the house style for the site design the storyboard or pages create the site map build the presentation test and debug the presentation

Planning the project What do you need to do to produce your web site? How long will the different tasks take? What order will you do things in? Planning is crucial — by failing to plan, you're planning to fail!

Decide on the purpose and audience of your site Purpose What is the purpose of your site? Is it selling something? Is it advertising something? Is it providing information? Audience Who will be looking at your site? How old are they? What gender? What educational background? What type of language do they use? How good are they at using computers?

Create a Mind Map What will be in your site? What information will you need? What pictures will you need? You may like to use a mind map for your initial ideas.

Create and gather content Gather and produce the content you will need to make your website. Write the content for your website (text). Take photos, create art work (images and a logo), find copyright free images that you can use.

Create the outline From your mind map, organise your ideas into an outline. The outline gives a summary of what will be in your website, it lists all the pages and their content. 1.Home Page Logo Business image Button links Menu Welcome text 2.About Us Page Logo Company information Company pictures 1, 2, 3 3.Contact Us Logo Address & Phone number Directions Google Map link

Decide on the house style What colours will you use? What fonts and font sizes? How will users navigate? What style of language will you use? Keep it simple, remember “less is more” Arial Times New Roman Lucida Handwriting

Design the storyboard or pages The storyboard is the blueprint for your site. These rough sketches tell your story and bring together all the elements with the navigation. The site design starts with the home page and moves to the other pages.

Produce a site map The site map shows how all your pages will link together.

Build and upload the website Make your pages using HTML or website software such as Dreamweaver or WordPress. Upload your pages onto your host server.

Test and debug the web site Proof read to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes. Get someone else to test it for you as well. Test all your pages and links to make sure that everything loads and works properly.

Your finished website!
