4 Evaporation What is Evaporation?
“Evaporation is the process of a liquid turning into a gas. This doesn’t require the liquid to boil.” Learning Activity Sketch the equipment set up for the evaporation experiment and label all of the equipment. Write down 3 safety precaution when using a Bunsen burner.

5 Evaporation Collect and set up the equipment as it is shown in the diagram above. Do not fill your evaporating dish or turn on your Bunsen burner.

6 Evaporation Method Check that all equipment is set up correctly.
Reading Activity Check that all equipment is set up correctly. Using a measuring cylinder, collect 20ml of solution to evaporate. Place your evaporating dish onto the scales and pour your solution into the dish. Record the starting mass of the solution. Place the evaporating dish onto your gauze and heat under a blue flame. If the solution starts t boil, pull the flame away for a few seconds. Once all of solution has evaporated, wait for equipment to cool and then measure the end mass. Solution (Start) mass (g) Salt (End) mass (g) Change in mass (g)

7 Learning Activity FILL IN THE BLANKS When heating the solution the _____ molecules absorb the _____ energy. The gives them enough energy to _____ the weak bonds between them and turn the water into a ______. As the liquid ______ it leaves the salt in the __________. Evaporating dish Evaporates Gas Brake Heat Water Heat

9 Learning Activity Salt Challenge The UAE is in desperate need for salt. We have been using large quantities to flavour our food, but now we need some urgently. You need to write a letter to the Shaik, suggesting a method for rapid salt production. The letter needs to be ¾ of a page long and use all of the scientific terminology you have learnt today.
