AIMS Practice Questions Teacher’s Guide

Group 1 Describe the change in moth population after the coal factory was shut down. -More moths were medium in coloration. Why is the bell curve in the first graph asymmetrical? -The coal-Factory had an effect on the environment. Coal caused trees to darken. What are some other environmental impacts do humans have on the earth? How do they impact organisms? -Factories by the coast dumping warm water into the ocean. -Nutrient run-off from Dairy Farms Create your own set of graphs to represent one of the scenarios you created above. Drawn it on your white board. A scientist was studying a moth that lives in a forest near a city. The colors of the species varied from light brown to dark brown. The graphs provided show the distribution of colors among the moths before and after a coal-burning factory in the city was shut down.

Group 2 Which population would likely increase if the frogs were removed from the ecosystem? - grasshoppers, bugs Which organism has the most diverse diet? -snake What would you expect to happen if all the snakes in the population were removed? The populations of frogs, birds, and squirrels would increase. What is the primary producer in this ecosystem? -grasses Use the information provided to draw a Tropic Pyramid of the ecosystem on your whiteboard.

Group 3 Which two organisms are most closely related? -Chinese Pangolin and Long-nosed echida Which two organisms have the least in common? -Aardvark and big-eared opossum In your opinion, which is the most important characteristic for determining how closely organisms are related? -defensive apparatus/ mode of reproduction Create a venn-diagram on your whiteboard to display the similarities and differences between the 4 organisms.

Group 4 Create a bar graph representing this data on your white board. Create a line graph representing this data on your white board Create a pie chart representing this data on your white board. Which graph best represents the distribution of insects collected from a large puddle? Why? -Pie Graph shows the composition of the puddle.

Group 5 A potato core was placed in a beaker of water as shown in the figure provided. Which diagram best represents the net movement of water? Use the information and results you determined above to develop your own experiment. Write down each step of the Scientific Method.

Group 6 Which of the following organisms can transform light energy into chemical energy? -1 and 2 If a disease killed off all of organism 2, which organism would be most affected? -5 because #2 is it’s only food source. Which organism is most important to the ecosystem and why? Primary producers (1 and 2) Which organism is the Apex predator? -9 Imagine that this food web represents a Riparian Ecosystem. Create your own food web and label each organism on your white board.

Group 7 Draw this classification diagram on your white board. Describe in your own words what the importance is of this classification diagram. -Important for determining genetic relationships. Put a star by the species that the Gunnison’s prairie dog is most closely related to. *White-tailed Prairie Dog Circle the common ancestor of the Utah prairie dog and Mexican prairie dog. -Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Draw an arrow in the direction of evolutionary change from past to present. -Arrow goes towards the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog

Group 8 What numeral on the graph points to a time when the birth rate exceeds the death rate of mice? -I Describe what is happening to the population at numeral II. - The number of births = The number of deaths What is the average mice population over the 15- year period? - About 6,000 Use the graph provided to create a data table. The table should include all the data points on the graph.

Group 9 Based on the data in the graph, what is the best prediction of what the carbon dioxide level will be in 2020? -405ppm Based on the data in the graph, what is the best prediction of what the change in temperature will be in 2010? -1.1 degrees C Do you think that the two variables have an influence on each other? -Yes, they both have a positive impact on the other. Create a hypothesis that is supported by the overall data trends in the graph. If the carbon dioxide concentration increases then the temperature will increase. Use the data from the graph to create a data table on your whiteboard. Make sure all data points are represented.

Group 10 What would most likely occur to the populations within the community after a wildfire burns the environment? -All populations will decrease in number. Their primary source of energy has been removed. What would happen if the population of herbivores in the community decreases? -Rabbits will decrease. Foxes and Hawks make stay stable for a while but will eventually decrease as well. Create a statement to describe the flow of energy as it passes through the organisms in the pyramid. -Energy flows from the Meadow plants to the rabbits, to the foxes and finally to the hawks. Energy is lost as it continues up the tropic pyramid. Use your knowledge of a Meadow Ecosystem and create a food web on your white board. You must include at least 10 organisms.
