Social Issue Research Project Victoria Howell ETHS 2410 Fall 2014 Police Brutality: African- American Community

o Police Brutality:  is something that was constantly popping up on my Facebook and Instagram news feed, also something that is always on the news. You are constantly hearing on the news about a young unarmed black male that was shot and killed by police or a black male that was illegally choked to death. Media Journal Interview Outside Of Class Activities. My Social Issue

o ERIC GARNER  Eric Garner was a 43 year old man who was minding his own business standing in front of a beauty salon after breaking up a fight when cops continued to harass him. When Eric asked police to please not touch him he was choked and slammed to the ground, Garner continued to state that he could not breathe he was later transferred to a hospital where he later passed away. There are some very corrupt police officers out there and something needs to be done about it. With video footage the officer was failed to be indicted. Maybe if they had body cameras on they could have see everything from all different points of view. Scholarly Research #1 https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=t5S2qRcO8Qw

o Tamir Rice  Tamir Rice was a 12 year old boy. He was at the park hanging out with his BB gun when a man who was at the park called 911 on Tamir and then left the scene. Within seconds of the call, the police officer showed up, shot and killed Tamir. The shooting was ruled a homicide. Rookie police officers are not ready for the line of duty that they are put into. Even though it was ruled a homicide police officers should have body cameras for a closer view and audio. Scholarly Research #2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x hVewrqGFRw

o Wendell Allen  Wendell Allen was a 20 year old man who was at home one evening when he heard some commotion going on in his home. Wendell got up from his bed and left his room to see what was going on. As he reached the top of the stairs he was shot and killed by NOPD officer. The police was doing a raid on his home as for Marijuana. The officer plead guilty to the shooting of Wendell and served 4 years and also resigned from his career. The officer was wrong for what he did. But I learned that he had a heart and cared about what he did and what he did to the family. This helped me with ideas for more footage at the crime scene. Body cameras, and maybe even someone there with a camera. Scholarly Research #3 https://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=_sTNeGQ5lzk

o To raise awareness on how great it would be for all of law enforcement to wear body cameras.  Plan an event for the community, the police, the mayor of each city, and the governor there to show them my point of view. Goal: To persuade peoples minds that is would be a good idea to get body cameras on all officers.  Cost: 1,000 to help with the cost of food and drinks for the guest who are able to make it to the event. The Intervention

o To every Idea there will be some people who will not be to fond of the idea, funding might also be a problem.  Everyone might not see the reason behind the need of body cameras. o Resistors: Law Enforcement, The community, City Mayors, and The Governor.  They don’t want to take time out of their day, they don’t want to pay for it. Make it at a time and day that everyone can be there, Try to spend as less as possible on food and drinks. Resistance to the Intervention

o Peers and Mentors  I know going to my peers and mentors they would give advice and guide me on what to do. o Best friend, family, Mentors, Advisors  When talking to various family and friends, they agreed to the need of police having body cameras. They agreed to helping me plan with the event, and with advertisement. Support for the Intervention

o At the end of the event I would like to have evaluations asking questions like:  Was this event helpful?, Would you support this cause and if so how can we contact you? o If all Law Enforcement had a body camera it would cut down on the police brutality, the officers that didn’t get indicted. Impact of the Intervention
