1 Imperialism Review Answer the following questions on the notecard given to you… 1. After Teddy Roosevelt became president, where did he focus his Imperial efforts? 2. What did the construction of the Panama Canal communicate to the world? 3. What did the Monroe Doctrine accomplish? 4. How did the Roosevelt Corollary change the Monroe Doctrine? 5. What does diplomacy mean?

Divide your card into 3 sections: 1. Roosevelt 2. Taft 3. Wilson For your assigned President, use your book and the help of your group members to answer the following questions: 1. What was their method of diplomacy? 2. Give an example of them using this type of diplomacy.

4 Definition Diplomacy: the complex and often challenging practice of fostering relationships around the world in order to resolve issues and advance interests

5 Big-Stick Diplomacy President: Theodore Roosevelt
Definition: “Speak softly and carry a big stick” –International negotiations based on the threat of force Example: Roosevelt Corollary: addition to the Monroe Doctrine that states the US will now use FORCE in Latin America to protect its economic interests Benefits: Demonstrates US power without having to really use it (bully) Drawbacks: Expensive, and you could have to use force (war)

7 Dollar Diplomacy President: William Howard Taft
Definition: Using economic power and business investment to influence governments, events, and policies Examples: US agrees to help Nicaragua pay its national debt in exchange for the US having military power there Taft also paid off Honduras’ debt to Great Britain to maintain peace Benefits: Uses American businesses and investments (banking/loans)- grows our economy and created allies Drawbacks: Costly, often motivated to send troops to protect investments

9 Moral Diplomacy President: Woodrow Wilson
Definition: It was our moral responsibility to deny recognition to any government it viewed as oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile to US interests Example: The Mexican Revolution The Mexican people overthrew a dictator we supported, then his replacement was also murdered, and so we refused to recognize their “government of butchers” Promoted democracy throughout the world Benefits: set a good tone for the US in the world Drawbacks: built off the idea of American Exceptionalism, gave Wilson a “preacher” reputation
