Education and Outreach Activities IODP U.S. Implementing Organization (JOI Alliance) & U.S. Science Support Program

Organizational Structure: USIO USIO (JOI Alliance) –Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) –Columbia University (LDEO) –Texas A&M University (TAMU) USSSP –JOI Board of Governors (US Institutions) –US Science Advisory Committee (USSAC) –Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) IODP USIO & USSSP

U.S. IODP E&O Activities: Foundations Plans: Based on the tasks outlined in NSF contracts. Goal: Implement high-quality, broad-based programs based on the scientific themes and discoveries of IODP tailored to the needs and educational philosophy of the U.S. community. USIO: –Primarily focused on riserless drilling vessel shipboard operations and science and shore-based facilities –Coordinated through JOI Alliance Team: JREPORT (Joint Report, Publication, Outreach/Education, Public Relations Team) USSSP: –Primarily focused on IODP postcruise scientific results IODP USIO & USSSP

U.S. IODP E&O Activities: Foundations Recognize IODP-MI is ultimately responsible for outreach/education at the international level. Engage IODP-MI and other IODP educational groups to ensure projects meet the mission of IODP. Work collaboratively on projects and share content to broaden the dissemination of IODP outreach/ education content. – IODP groups – Other science/education professionals – Columbia University and Texas A&M University provide resources to support two educational and research initiatives IODP USIO & USSSP

E&O Definition* Education refers to all content-based activities or products related to IODP science or technology designed for “educational” audiences. Outreach encompasses all activities or products that identify, describe, or promote the international IODP. IODP USIO & USSSP * Definition from February 2004 IODP-MI E&O Workshop
