2 MLA Format Heading: upper left-hand corner of first page; include your name, teacher/professor name, course name, date: – day, month, year: 12 February 2016. Pagination: Your last name and page number, beginning with first page in the upper right-hand corner of paper. Title of paper is centered; it is not bolded, italicized, or underlined. Book titles are italicized. Entire paper should be double-spaced; use Times New Roman and 12-point font.

5 In-text Citations In-text citations occur after the quotation but before the period. Also place the period after in-text citations of summarized or paraphrased text. Use block format for quotations longer than four typed lines. Also, – Indent 1” from the margin – Omit quotation marks – Place parenthetical citation after end punctuation mark of quotation – Do not place a period after parenthetical citation

6 In-text Citations If source has three or fewer authors, use all authors’ names in in-text citation; alphabetize names. (Brown, Goodman, and Little) or (Brown, Goodman, and Little 214). If source has more than three authors, use last name that occurs first in the alphabet and “et. al.” (Brown et al.) or (Brown et al. 12). For print sources, if author’s name is included before quote, place page number only in citation.

7 Works Cited Format The words “Works Cited” are centered; they should not be underlined, italicized, or bolded. Use a hanging indent for Works Cited entries (indent all lines subsequent to the first line). Alphabetize list by the first word of the entry. Include “Web” or “Print” to indicate the type of source.

8 A few other things… The term novel is used for fiction only. Numerals under ten must be spelled out. Refer to authors by their last name, not their first. When you write about literature, use present tense. Internet (noun) vs. internet (adjective).
