2 Primary School Improvement Partners Induction Day 31 March 2008

3 Aims for the day To understand the role of the school improvement partner in Devon. To gain knowledge of the procedures and expectations for school improvement partners working in Devon. To establish a working relationship with the managing adviser. To be confident to undertake and report on Visit 0 in the summer term 2008.

4 Roles, responsibilities and line management SIP Handbook references: Key roles: Section 1, page 5 and page 15 Points of contact: Section 2, appendix 5

5 Devon Priorities: Narrowing the gap between the educational outcomes for all pupils and those achieved by more vulnerable groups and the lowest attaining 20% Generally attainment continues to rise in Devon but it rises more slowly for the lowest attaining 20% of the population.

6 Vulnerable groups – objectives: Reduce the gap between the attainment of the lowest 20% of pupils and the rest as measured by the Foundation Stage Profile outcomes. Improve rates of progress of the lowest attaining 20% in both primary and secondary schools. Improve the outcomes for children in care to bring them at least in line with national expectations. Improve rates of attendance and reduce numbers of pupils with persistent absence, particularly in priority schools.

7 Devon’s Current Priorities Raising the bar – stretching educational outcomes for the more able At Key Stages 1 and 2 Devon’s performance at Levels 2 and 4 is above the median of statistical neighbours. However, for the higher Levels 3 and 5 Devon’s position is at or below the median of statistical neighbours

8 More able pupils – objectives: Improve the proportion of pupils attaining Level 3 at KS1 in reading, writing, mathematics and science so that Devon is ahead of statistical neighbours median. Improve the proportion of pupils attaining Level 5 at KS2 in mathematics and science so that Devon is ahead of statistical neighbours median. Continue to increase the proportion of Level 5s in English.
