WARM UP 1.Given the following reaction…… Ba(NO 3 ) 2(aq) + Na 2 CO 3(aq)  BaCO 3(s) + 2 NaNO 3(aq) Calculate the yield of sodium nitrate when you start with 1.9 moles of barium nitrate.

Reaction Yield

Stoichiometry Quantitative study of chemical reactions –Grams, moles, atoms, etc.

Yield Amount of product obtained in a reaction –Measured in grams

Theoretical Yield Calculated yield based on grams of reactant –Assume complete, perfect reaction

Theoretical Yield Calculating –Balanced equation –Grams of reactant to moles –Reactant to product –Moles of product to grams –2 CO (g) + O 2(g)  2 CO 2(g) –185 g CO x 1 mol CO = 6.61 mol CO 1 28 g CO –6.61 mol CO x 2 mol CO 2 = 6.61 mol CO 2 1 2 mol CO –6.61 mol CO 2 x 44 g CO 2 = 291 g CO 2 1 1 mol CO 2

Actual Yield The measured amount of product obtained in a real procedure Always less than theoretical yield –Can’t recover all product –Reaction not complete –Side reactions reduce product

Percent Yield Efficiency of reaction Actual yield Theoretical yield x 100

WRAP UP Calculate a percent yield for a reaction if the theoretical yield is 29.58 g and you are able to obtain only 4.2 g of product. Describe one reason this percent yield might have occurred.

WARM UP Determine the theoretical yield of water if you start with 33 g of H 2 and an unlimited amount of O 2. (2 H 2 + O 2  2 H 2 O)

WRAP UP CaF 2 + H 2 SO 4  2 HF + CaSO 4. 713.40 g of CaF 2 was treated with excess H 2 SO 4 and a yield of 704.92 g of CaSO 4 was obtained. Calculate the percent yield of CaSO 4.
