3. Drugs and Medicines A drug is a substance that changes how the body works either in a positive or negative way. A medicine is a drug that prevents or cures.

4. What Medicines Do Medicines are generally grouped according to the effect they have on the body or what they can do. Different types of medicines: Prevent diseases. Fight germs. Relieve pain. Treat other conditions such as cold and allergy symptoms.

5. Types of Medicines There are two main types of medicines: Prescription medicines Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines Both kinds of medicines can have side effects and should be used with caution.

6. Prescription Medicines The doctor’s order, or prescription, shows how much of the medicine is needed and how often it should be taken. Only licensed pharmacists are authorized to fill prescriptions and give you the medicine to take home.

To use medicines safely, follow these guidelines: Make sure that you are aware of any side effects that may lead to injury, such as drowsiness. Read the label. Take safety precautions.

10. Misusing Medicines To avoid misusing medicines: Take medicines only when needed. Take medicines according to directions. Take only the recommended or prescribed dosage. Take the medicine for the length of time prescribed by a doctor. Do not take an OTC medicine for a longer period of time than is recommended on the label. Do not give your prescription medicines to anyone else. Do not mix medicines without your doctor’s approval.
